Is the gen2 stock much of an improvement over the original jae stock? The ability to apply tension to the barrel is an interesting featue on the newer model.Could shims be made to tension the barrel on the first generation,if any gains could come from this.

I have a Gen 1 JAE and am enjoying it, but kind of wanted the tension screw.

I did some reading on barrel tension screws on other forums. While I could not find much info on the JAE tension adjustment, the Troy and Sage stocks both have tension screws as well. From thehighroad:

The barrel is only semi free floated forward of the op rod guide block.
The barrel tension screw allows you to dial in some downward pressure, it is rarely used.
The TROY MCS has a similar adjustment at the bottom of the forearm that ulls the front band down.

All 4 of my SAGE stocks have the tension screw, but I am not using them.

Obviously they are different stocks then the JAE, but it was an interesting read.

I found another article discussing the JAE's tension tweaking and they found it produced mixed results (although the owner admitted he was not a good enough shot to measure consistently tight groups regardless of any tampering with the rifle). Maybe an experienced marksman could put it to use with the right ammo, but for an average shooter the improvement would be too small to measure consistently.

I think the Gen 2 is improved, in the fact that they are lighter, slimmer and have far more adjustments than the Gen 1.
I recently upgraded from a 1st gen to a gen 2 and really like it.
The barrel tensioner is a bit finicky but once you get the right amount of tension the rifle certainly maintains a tighter grouping.
