James D. Julia has another fine auction coming up

Got my catalogs in the mail this week. Iron framed Henry? You have fine taste! Lot 1002 is what you need to go after then. Tommy Rholes had a pile of real nice Winchesters (including predecessors) that he had gathered over several decades of collecting. I think I might try for one of his rifles, just haven't narrowed it down yet. You going to try your hand?

As much as it's probably a pipe dream, the problem I see is with buyer's premium, taxes, and the Canadian dollar you're likely looking at an additional 35% after the hammer comes down.

Its one thing to go into a shop, see the price and live with it but as auction hype goes these will go for a lot more than auction estimate. These are the best of the best and with the providence even submitting a reasonable bid, it will be exceeded in 30 seconds. On side note, you just wouldn't throw it in the trunk and roll down the window at the boarder and say "nothing to declare"
Realistically I would need to unload the heart of my collection to do this. I do periodically consider this and put many guns into one gun, just not under the hype and pressure of a cross boarder auction.

Yes, a fellow needs to win the lottery to be able to afford some of these rifles. I tried my hand a few times. I won a real nice Deluxe Model 55 at JDJ a couple years ago, and two nice Deluxe 1894s at Rock Island Auction last Spring. I did not go, but bid in absentee. With JDJ I called in my bid and someone bid on my behalf, and with RIA, I submitted my bids via the Internet. I would have liked to have been there in person, but this way I was still able to just bid what I was comfortable with, then let the cards fall where they may. Don't get caught up in the "fever" that way. If I won, I won, if not, no big deal. Had them all imported via Clay out to Prophet River. Yes, there is cost to it, but if it is something you really want, or just can't find up here, sometime it is worth it, IMHO. I have sold a pile of the really nice guns I had to upgrade to a smaller collection, but it has been worth it to me. It is just hard to find guns like some of those up here.

Being on the phone is the way to go, and you can get a feeling of how its going while talking to your bidder.

Clay is the way to go and probably the most economical but a friend of mine had 2 incidents that WERE NOT Clays fault that really worries me when going that way. Nothing he could do and no recourse from the other end.
