Sorry to resurrect an old thread.
When I lived in Red Deer, Alberta, in about 2001-ish I wanted an M-14 clone in the worst way possible. On my income I couldn't afford an M1A and the Norcs weren't available locally at the city's 1 and only (at the time) gun store (this was before CGN). I saw an ad in the paper advertising a bunch of guns for sale, as a list. One was a BM-59 the guy wanted $600 for. Sounds good to me! I'd heard about them through old 80's gun magazines that showcased all that good old stuff. I looked it up online and to me it just looked like an M-14 clone and semi-auto versions were made. I called the seller, pleasant old chap, we talked about the rifles condition. Pristine, almost unfired. Included 6 magazines, the bayonet, a sling, original manual and box. Awesome! Then we got as far as him asking for my PAL # to initiate a transfer and he asked "what other prohibited rifles I had". "Prohibited rifles???" "Yeah, the BM-59 is a 12.5 OIC Prohibited Rifle. You need to be grandfathered for 12.5 firearms to acquire this" he tells me. "Oh.....Sorry for wasting your time".
I saw another one a year or 2 later at a Bud Haynes gun auction. It went for well over $2000 if my memory serves me correctly because apparently not too many were imported and they are quite "rare".
