I'm considering buying a James River M14F and was hoping some people in this section could provide some information in regards to quality, value, accuracy etc.. I understand they come with 8620 forged receivers, Criterion barrels, and no cast or MIM parts. Any informed opinions are welcome.

Thanks

Yup, that was smart assed in extremis. To my knowledge there are at least 2 members with those rifles (way above my pay grade, I'm afraid) maybe try to PM CGN "45ACPKING" he's an SME on the M14/305/etc

Funny, my ears where ringin.... Only happens when someone drops my name hahaha
Haven't held or fired or dismantled a JRA. I almost jumped on the bandwagon but decided the LRB rifle I built for myself is pretty hard to beat.
The best info you are gonna get is to go to the US M14/M1A forums and repeat the question. NO ONE in canada has enough experience with the JRA rifles to make a fair comparison to the other versions availlable.
That's all I gots for ya on the subject.

I have one and would say they are on par with Springfield even maybe LRB. are they better ?, in some ways maybe, it is fun to shoot, quite accurate and extremely smooth, fit and finish are great, although I'm sure 45ACPKING could find something to tune,
The bare receivers are well sought after for custom builds, and obviously Criterian barrels, speak for themselves.
If you need any more closeup pics of anything. let me know

I should have personal experience with one by December. From what I've heard, if you buy a Bula receiver and bolt, lapping for contact is almost not necessary as contact is nearly perfect out of the box.

My last LRB with TRW bolt required very little lapping as well. I maybe spent 5 actual minutes of time lapping, but it took me 90 minutes total because I lapped with 120 grit first, then 220, then 500 then 600 and checked for contact between each iteration. I stopped when I had 90% contact on each side.

Tony.

The last LRB M25 I built for a fella wouldn't accept an LRB bolt (purchased separately) once the krieger barrel was installed. Not without jigging up the bolt and recutting the legs in the mill.... Not somethin I'm about to do LOL
BUT an excellent condition used TRW bolt required only minimal lapping to fit up just perfect. Gotta love those good ol usgi parts ;)

Thanks guys. Down the road I think I'd like to mount an S&B 5-20x50 Ultra Short or a Nightforce 2.5-10x42 NXS. What's the consensus on the M14.ca CASM Gen II steel mount? With that mount and a 50mm or 42mm objective does anyone know what the lowest ring height that will work would be?
