thanks! It was my fathers, he gave it to me just before he passed away... Very special rifle to me.
It shoots very well too! Depending on the ammo though, MFS ammo shoots high, about 16" @ 100 meters but with Russian surplus it's pretty well bang on! Weird ammo would make that much difference...

1905 Ross Mark II** Target Rifle With History, Empress of Britain, Empress of Ireland & Halifax Explosion
A friend of mine called me Sunday evening and told me he knew of a family that wanted to part with their grandfathers Ross rifle. I contacted the owner of the rifle and went to see it yesterday, worked out an agreement and I took it home today.
The original owner was Captain James Anderson Murray. He was in command of the Empress of Britain for several years, he was also captain of the Empress of Ireland on a trip to Quebec. He became the Montreal or Quebec harbour master until he retired.
The following information from his obituary in a Halifax Paper.
When WWI began he went to Halifax as Lieutenant-Commander James Anderson Murray, R.N.V.R. (Lieutenant, R.N.C.V.R.) - former Captain of the CPR liner, Empress of Britain (I) - assistant to Chambers and convoy liaison. He was killed in the Halifax explosion in 1917.
This was his personal target rifle
It is a 1905 Mark II** Civilian
The Ross is in great condition about VG ++ overall.
The identical rifle is found in the Ross Rifle Story, Page 174, Plate 119A. It does not have the bayonet lug extension like the picture, or the same rear sight.
Barrel Length is 30 1/2", in VG condition with a target crown. It needs a good cleaning.
VG Walnut Stock with a some dark spots that adds character to it.
It does not have any Government acceptance marks.
The rear sight is BSA Martin, British Patent 5992/08. Picture is found in The Ross Rifle Story, Page 297, Plate 293A. It is missing the eye piece and I will be looking for one in the future.
The front sight has a Pivited foresight hood, referred to as the Northover hood. The information is from The Ross Rifle Story, Page 242, Plate 220A
The dark piece on the right side of the forestock looks like a crack but its just the different color of the wood.
I have pictures of Captain Murray and a trophy from the Empress of Britain Rifle Club that he won in 1913.

That is the exact same variation of II** that I have. No history, though. Mine was also missing the eyepiece; I found an old pattern multiple aperture unit - not one of the more common PH 6 holers. Threaded in correctly. I thnk that these are rather late II**s. Will check my serial number, and PM it to you.

Received a 1925 dated, Spanish army marked Astra 1921 with the earlier Esperanza y Unceta markings. Looked for one for years, got tired of looking, and ordered one from the US through Prophet River. Took about 2 months and was really painless - anyone looking for something specific and hard to find should consider it!

I added two more Mausers to my collection.
The top gun is an 8mm, DWM 1916, Mauser G98b.
The lower is a Brazilian M1908/34 .30, in 30-06. The 1908/34 .30 is not as common as M-954, and M-968. I had to sacrifice some prized posessions to obtain them but pulled it off. You already saw the Ross Mk II**.

What kind of fee did you need to pay the importer for his services?
X2 on that. I used Prophet River to bring up my firearms. At the time they offered a discount on multiples - might still. If you're buying several firearms you can at least trim costs a bit this way.
