"...Japanese Pedersen predated the M1941..." That's because there was no such thing as a 1941 Johnson then.
"...anything on the rifle's functioning..." Hatcher's Notebook and/or Hatcher's Book of the Garand. One or the other has a chapter about rivals to the M1. The latter, I think.

The earliest rifle I am aware of to use multi locking lugs, six in this case, is the 1894 Mondragon straight pull rifle.
