A stroll around the Yushukan, Japan's premier military museum adjacent to the controversial Yasakuni Shrine in central Tokyo.
This museum presents a revisionist take on Japanese history, including downplaying or even failing to mention mass atrocities perpetrated by the Japanese before and during World War II including the Rape of Nanking, The Burma-Thailand Death Railway, Bataan Death March, Sandakan Death March, activities of the Kempeitai, treatment of Allied POWs and civilian internees, and many more horrific examples of Japanese military cruelty. It is also where war criminals such as Hideki Tojo are honoured and memorialised.

Thank you duly noted! It's a shame how the Japanese government to this day downplay or outright deny the atrocities they wrecked during the war.
Imagine if Germany never apologized or admitted the Holocaust after the war to this day, what would happen?
Yet that's exactly what the Japanese government is doing and educating their young today. Got away with it too. Pity.

Yup, the Japs still see themselves as victimized and unapologetic for their war conduct.

The invasion of China by Japan in the years leading up to WW2 is often ignored. What Japan did to the Chinese civilian population was right on par with the Nazi concentration camp atrocities, as well as Stalin's starvation of millions of Ukrainians.
The Japanese army's use of Chinese POW's for live bayonet practise is just one example of the barbaric history of the Japanese military. There are many others.

We are constantly reminded of the victims of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings, but never a peep about the horrific butchery, for which Japan was responsible. Japan has used this 'Atomic Victim' narrative, over and over, to gloss over, minimize, and even deny their own disgusting history prior to and during WW2.

I'm tired of hearing only Japan's version of history.

If you listen to Truman's speech, it's obvious that he had mixed feelings and it was with great reluctance that he authorized the bombs being dropped. On the other side, some faction of the Jap leadership were determined to keep fighting to total extinction. a little known fact that the americans had a third bomb in reserve. Some people just can't leave history for what it is.

The approved Canadian narrative is all about how unjust we were in re-locating Japanese Canadians away from the west coast. Back in 1988 the Cdn government apologized for this and offered compensation to those affected. Trudeau was plumping this message again yesterday, the 75th anniversary of the end of WW2.:sok2

Our people who were prisoners of the Japanese never got an apology or compensation. Ditto for thousands of former US, UK, Australian and Dutch POWs, to say nothing of a host of people from Asian countries which were occupied by the Japanese. People have long memories. The Japanese are not well liked in Asia, although people like their money, cars and electronics.

I served with a man who had been a POW in Japan. He did slave labor in the shipyards and coal mines and lived under extremely harsh conditions deprived of adequate food, housing and medical treatment. Tough to know who was the harshest on their captives; Russians on Germans, Germans on Russians or Japanese on everyone. We had a family member on the American side who was on Corrigedor and was never heard from again.

Every culture takes a turn at being a bully.

We always hear how wonderful the British Empire was, but we usually only hear from the British view.

History is full of atrocities carried out by one group on another, it would seem humans are not always nice people.

But if you like horror stories " The Rape of Nanking ", The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II, by Chang, Iris

Coincidentally, I just finished reading, "Road of Bones", an account of the Japanese siege of Kohima in Burma in 1944. The Brits had their generalship back and won with the help of American air support, incl a lot of airlift. They also had a better logistics system and were never short on supplies. It was still a pretty close run.

In large part the Japanese defeated themselves through a combination of hubris, belief in the superiority of the Bushido spirit, poor leadership and inadequate logistics. Their logistics plans were largely based on using captured British supplies, never a sound idea. They had no lines of communication for re-supply or casualty evacuation which meant that large numbers starved to death or dragged themselves off into the jungle to die of wounds. The vultures were the real winners.

Certain elements of Japanese society paint the Second World War as a romantic adventure where Japan "stood up" to the western world. Asia, led by Japan, sought to assert itself and battled great enemies so that "Asia would be for Asians." In the end, the project was too heroic, too brave, too ambitious. After a titanic clash, Japan was beaten by the combined forces of many nations. And so the sacrifice of Japanese servicemen must be honored and revered. As to the issue of Japanese war atrocities, these are stricken from the national memory. In Germany, there are holocaust deniers. In Japan, nobody denies Japanese war crimes, because it is unecessary. A conspiracy of silence engaging the entire intellectual community assures that the Rape of Nanking or Unit 731 is never discussed within Japan.

But try as they do to deceive themselves, there are cracks in this whitewash of Japanese history. Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor was profoundly irrational, apart from moral considerations. Churchills spoke of the insane ambitions of Japanese militarists who sought war as an end in itself, without considering the viability of conquest. To attack both the British Empire and the United States was more than mere arrogance and chauvinism. It was crazy. Japan could never prevail. The irrational project sprung from a de facto religious cult that controlled Japan. Their emperor was worshipped as some kind of god; militarism was venerated and everything seemed possible in a Japanese culture steeped in racism and megalomania. Japan lost the war at the Battle of Midway in June of 1942. Yet to maintain faith in the cult, Japanese youth were sacrificed in useless suicide attacks against the US Navy, and their tragic and futile deaths celebrated as an act of religious piety.

Thinking people can only view Japan's war as foolish, even perverted. The emperor was a rather ordinary man who could do nothing to overcome the awesome military and industrial superiority of the western world. The adventure was doomed from the start and Japan sacrificed its youth for nothing. Hide the atrocities, deny the crimes committed against China and the world, but the existing whitewashed narrative cannot hide the crimes committed against the Japanese people by the emperor and the cult of militarists. They thought fanaticism could overcome western industry.

The truth is there to see. Japanese museums venerate suicide. In truth, the war and especially the suicide attacks are a national disgrace. Japanese suffering meant nothing, much as mass suicide in any other religious cult means nothing, except to serve as a warning to those who would forsake reason.

The concept of Face and suicide for failure were an integral part of the Japanese Psyche. They even ritualized it.

Japan may believe themselves or push a narrative that exonerates or deflects from their actions of the past but it is very clear in places like China and Korea that Japan's methods in many countries has put a deeply ingrained negative sentiment and mistrust towards Japan.

You’re description is impeccable, I worked for a Japanese company and spent time there and socialized with them and you described them to a T. Very nice people when it’s going their way but it not reciprocal.
