Jard J48 Hands On

I really want a mag fed semi in 223 but I can't swing $3000 on a xcr. I've almost bitten a few times on a kel tech but $1000 seems steep for a plastic piece. If these Jard rifles have the bugs worked out and could be brought in under $1000 I have no doubt they'd sell a ton of them.

No XCR is worth $3000 and don't waste your money on the KelTec.
If you can afford it but aren't sure about Rob Arms then look at the Bushmaster ACR, the Tavor, or if you're feeling rich the Swiss Arms, all three of those are quality firearms you won't have problems with.
If you like the ACR then look on the EE for a used one hat hasn't been converted to non restricted yet, you'll be changing the barrel anyway so round count doesn't really matter.
For less money a used AR180B-2 is probably the best non restricted available for under $2000 but I wouldn't pay more than $1600-$1700 depending what extras it comes with.
The Jard looks promising but I have no experience with them and don't know if they are working on fixes to the issues they had and are planning to release more or if the ones in circulation are all we'll see.

I sold an XCR-L for $1700, I wouldn't pay any more than that for one again. SU 16 is OK if you can get one for $600 with the after market parts already added. The Jard is not worth $1500, even with the issues worked out. Dean( Jard owner) said he was going to add a better hand guard ,as the one on it now is garbage. He also was talking about making the stock more inline with the receiver . Just save more money and get the ACR,in the long run you'll be much happier.
No offence to Driller, but in my opinion the Jard is not much better than the SU16. And as a matter of fact the SU 16 was way more reliable , had a way better charging handle and had a way better fit and finish.

I've got no hate on for this rifle, but people should really have a look at one before they buy it.
I was lucky enough to get a full refund for the one I had.

I recently bought a J48 as well from another CGN user. All the updates have been done on this rifle and I have had zero issues with it.
I just got it the other day so its still a bit early to tell but I took it to the range yesterday and tried to run it hard. I was using Norinco 55gr 5.56 and Aguila 62gr FMJ 5.56 ammo, The accuracy I had was pleasantly surprising. I have zero failures and zero light primer strikes.
All in all I am so glad I bought this gun. I'll try and get to the range again this week and get enough data for a full review.

What your way of running it hard.

Not to derail, but why is it the MR-1 never comes up in these discussions about NR .223 rifles?

Under $2k, takes AR mags, well reviewed as uber reliable and moderately accurate...

I'm just kinda curious why it gets no love up here? I'm half tempted to go that route myself one day for a non-r .223 semi.

I think the MR1 is ergonomically challenged. Thats probably why it doesn't get much love here. Other then that it's a decent rifle.

I don't blame you. Some of us just can't justify 2000-5000 dollars for a semi auto .223. I have owned just about everything on the market in that respect and it still has me looking for something that suits my needs. I don't want a fancy battle rifle. I just want something simple and affordable that works and still makes the liberals crap their pants when they see it :p
I also prefer things made of metal. The SU-16 rifles are great IMO but I like something that I don't have to worry about cracking easily. The SU-16 is also not worth the $$ it sells for. The Mini 14 is ok but doesn't scare liberals well enough, also I have had baaaad experiences with the M14 style action so I avoid it like the plague.

I think these rifles have promise, they just need to finish working out the quirks. They seem to be close.

Only if you want to use optics.... with irons it is beautiful..

mostly because it is a shotgun base...

The mag release ergonomics leave something to be desired for speed... but otherwise they are nice too.

Yes they were close, but how the first run made it past QC is a mystery. Why Dean let these go out like they did makes no sense. They had to know there were problems as you couldn't get past 3 rnds without a failure. Now they have to start over , only with a bad rep. They have a good trigger, nice barrel and are light weight , going for them. But they need some improvements, such as , hand guard system, the charging handle and the boxy??? Receiver ,and the stock being raised an inch. But Dean knew all this already but chose to release this to Canada. It may be harder to reintroduce these now, even if the bugs are worked out.
Your right, some of these NR are way to expensive but it depends what your looking for. I'm looking for the AR look with accuracy and don't weigh 10+ lbs. So far no luck , but I just ordered an MV . So if it's accurate I'll be good to go. I know it's expensive , but if I had known what I know now about all the others, well i,d be in money :)

Anyone else who watched the video, do you agree with me that the bolt wasn't fully into battery when the 'light strike' happened?

I was wondering this as well. Pretty sure that was the hammer hitting the bolt/firing pin but I could be wrong. If so, it may need more powerful recoil springs.

NEA should buy the rights to make them in canada and do a 223 and 7.62x39 version. They have the machinery and know how. Could keep the price low.

Unfortunately NEA doesn't have the best reputation here, they had a lot of quality control issues in the early days and have never been able to get things 100% since. They seem to concentrate on their contract work and let their quality control on the civilian products slide. It's unfortunate because I've used a lot of their parts in my AR builds and have never had issues but there are a lot of reports of failures.

I don't think it's based on a shotgun directly, it's more like their R1 in different furniture and chambered for .223. MR1's are certainly good quality rifles, a lot of people think they're ugly; but the jard looks like a paintball gun!
