The Visionary

We are incredibly saddened to report that Jason Hairston, the visionary leader and founder of KUIU, was found dead at his home in Dixon, CA on Sept. 4, 2018. He took his own life. He is survived by his wife Kirstyn and 2 children. The family has requested that donations be made to support CTE-related research at the Boston University Concussion Legacy Foundation in lieu of sending flowers.

Jason, 47, founded KUIU with a vision to bring the lightest and highest performance technical fabrics and designs directly to customers through a radically transparent business model.

Here at KUIU, we are committed to fulfilling Jason’s vision for this company and our hunting community. While our employees are understandably shocked by the news of Jason’s death, we are driven to ensure that Jason’s spirit lives on through the success of this company. Our customers and supplier partners should know that we are here to meet their needs.

Jason’s close friend and KUIU executive Brendan Burns: “Jason was the first to recognize a need within the outdoor community for products of uncompromising quality, designed to thrive in the harshest conditions. Jason was a visionary leader who worked tirelessly to bring his concept to life, and his legacy lives on in KUIU’s spirit of relentless innovation."

i met him few years ago in Whitehorse at the beginning of new history after he left sitka when his stuffs was built in canada, it was a nice guy but never buy in the hype he created.

Love Sitka, Like Kuiu too, very sad to learn this was a suicide.. I can't imagine what would cause him to take his own life - he appeared to hide his depression well. very sad he was unable to get help.

He created two of the largest hunting clothing companies out there. Hard to call it hype.

should look into mountaineering gear and clothing and explains to me how sitka and kiui are not hype .... giving a good rebate to guide and outfitter to launch a product then the clients want it s the same hype.

i was offered gear by the man himself ...
