Jaydog DOESN'T go hunting - Muntjac Deer

Some helpful advice there- thanks!
After an overnight flight to Heathrow and a 5h drive to Newcastle I'm a mess and my guide is still MIA. Wrote two more outfits as emergency backup and am off to bed. 9h time changes are less than fun. :(
Dreaming of tiny deer........

Limited? your joking right, as Ive said before, Canadians can only dream about how much hunting is available in the UK, and its cheap

I was surprised at the amount of hunting available, but "cheap" is a relative term.

Compared to you coming here and hiring a guide, it is definitely low cost. However, comparing the cost of "resident" hunting is like comparing apples and ostriches; $200 CAD can buy a Canadian resident as many days of hunting (in their home province) as they can afford to miss work, but relatively few ungulates in a year. As many coyotes, wolves, foxes and rabbits as you want.

Britain is "pay-to-play" everywhere, but you might have the opportunity to take 2, 3 or 6 deer in a day, but then you often have to pay additional to take any meat home.

In Alberta a $25 permit gets you 6 weeks of pheasant hunting, 2/day and 6 in your possession. Britain, for $25,000 CAD you and 7 friends can shoot 400 pheasants in a day.

Like I said, comparing whales and wheat.

As for getting skulls home, as long as they are boiled out, you are unlikely to have a problem. As none of the deer species in the UK are rare/endangered I prefer the 'easier to ask forgiveness than permission' method.

I put my 2 roe skulls in a cardboard box, with some other souvenirs, tied some twine around it and threw it in checked baggage. No one asked what was in the box. CBSA was more interested in the Scotch and Pim's.

.243/100gr used to be the min legal for all deer in England, pretty sure they reduced that to .22 centrefires for Munties and Chinese water deer.
I'd still be leaning towards .243, and I used to use a .22-250 for Roe in Scotland before I went .243 for everything. I'd rate Munties as tougher than Roe, certainly thicker skinned.
>22 c/f min only in Scotland and the .243 with 100 gn had to produce enough pounds feet of energy to qualify mine used to do 3100fps and was ok, Are you hunting with someone, English hunting laws are alittle harder that here.

As long as you can aquire permission from a land owner your pretty set Oh how I miss home, I was lucky enough to have enough permission that taking a deer or two per week during the season didn't hurt the numbers at all. Not to mention the night time rabbit and fox hunting.

I must have been a bad man in a past life because I'm getting my payback this week! With four days notice I wrote about 6 stalking companies looking for a chinese water deer hunt here in England. No luck and 4 of 6 never even wrote back. One guy did and offered me a Muntjac hunt (so I started this thread). Then he stopped replying to emails and I ended up packing my hunting clothes and trusting it would work out. He reappeared when I made it to England (his internet provider seems as reliable as Shaw!) but said that Muntjac was off but I could go on a Fallow deer cull hunt (multiple animals, one price). Good location and great price BUT I've hunted them here in BC so it only felt like a good second place at first until I realized that I was going hunting on some huge fancy estate and my 'loaner' gun was going to be a fancy old drilling!! :)
This afternoon I get a text "My mum's basement flooded and I can't go hunting...." :( I feel sorry for the guy and he was great about it. Next time I'm in Britain I get a free hunt and he's still trying to scrape up a substitute guide.
Crazy times for sure and based on the last hour of research my "Plan F" (I must be on F by now....) will be to spend Saturday roaming around Mayfair since Purdy, Boss, Holland and Holland, and William and Son are all within walking distance. The credit card is definitely staying in the hotel!!

Jay, that blows man. How long are you there? What part of the country are you going to be in? Depending on the where when, I might be able to help (no CWD or Munties though).

Hopefully Dave's links help you out.

CGN comes through! Thanks guys, but I just saw this and fly out Sunday at 1430h so there really is no time to recover now. There is a good chance I will be back here in the next couple months for work again so I'm taking the long term view on this and not getting too worked up.
In the meantime I'm in the world's tiniest hotel room dreaming of all the guns worth as much as my house I will check out tomorrow......
