I have an old Winchester pre nickel-steel barrel that seems to have black coming out no matter how many times I clean it. I'm not sure if the fowling is powder or lead or both, but the patches always seem to come out with black on them. I shoot lead cast bullets and light loads of XMR5744. I want to shoot black powder as well.

Will JB Compound damage the bore of this older rifle? I don't want to clean it, only to find that it shoots worse than before. KD

I have had the same thing with all of my Martinis and Sniders. No matter how well or often I clean or swab I get a somewhat dirty patch. I asked on another forum not too long ago and the concensus was that it likely was lead although the barrel looks spotless. I don't think it causes any problem with accuracy as I can't hit anything with a clean...or dirty barrel.

I don't think the dark is lead; Martinis for example were usually shot with paper patched bullets. I think the bores may look smooth but actually have a fine frosting of corrosion on them from corrosive priming in days gone by. I think this fine pitting holds the powder fouling.
Bottom line is if you are shooting smokeless run several patches through and finish with a oil that you know will not evaporate or migrate. For black powder lots of hot water and a bronze brush then dry and oil.

I ran both the smooth and the coarse JB through my Mosin and they still come out pretty black. I wasn't prepared to clean the gun the entire day so I'll wait for the cumulitive effects of repeated cleaning with both the JB Bore Cleaner and Hoppes Benchrest to try and coax out the copper. I figure after several sessions of shooting it will clean up.
