Hey guys. My gunsmith is in the process of drilling/tapping the receiver of my JC Higgins Model 20, in order to mount a picatinny rail, and a Scopechief 6 — 2.5-8X32. He called my the other day to mention that the rib on the back of the receiver doesn't seem to line up with the rib on the barrel. (although the barrel is straight)

He said he can make it work by using windage adjustable rings, if it needs it. His concern was that if I went with standard rings, I may run out of windage adjustment.

Has anyone ever encountered this?

If windage adjustable rings have to be used, are they secure enough to hold zero?

Thanks.

My initial thoughts are, take whatever advice your gunsmith is telling you. He has the gun in hand and is best positioned to advise what the appropriate solution is. And...it is a 20ga JC Higgins...not a sniper rifle. So long as it holds the scope from flying off, don't fret about "zero".

Thanks guys. Much appreciated. It's a 12 gauge, 2 3/4, pump action.

I'm not that concerned about the "zero". I basically wanted a project gun that needed some clean up, refinishing of the stocks etc. At my gun range, people aren't allowed to shoot shotgun at the 25 yard pistol range anymore. — Too many complaints about destroyed target boards, and understandable.

I typically shoot a .22 bolt action at 50 yards, and that's where I'll be designated to shoot the 12 gauge as well. But, when I tried shooting the 12 gauge this fall without any sights, it was so hard to hit anything. I could barely put it on paper. The shotgun has no rear sight, and only 2 brass beads along the rib of the barrel.

I thought, if I could put a 2-7X32 scope on the shotgun, it would probably be easier to hit an acorn squash, or 4-5" pumpkins at 50 yards. Although the Bushnell Scopechief is older, it's in great condition, but seems like a lot of scope for the shotgun. The gun itself is already heavy, - feels like 9-10 pounds without the scope.

I've never tried anything like this before, I only shoot rimfire - .22 & .17 HMR. I have no idea how accurate a smooth bore 21" barrel with a scope will be at 50 yards. I'm not expecting hole in hole, but ideally, if I could hit a 3-4" target at that range, it'll serve its purpose.

Thanks again.
