Looking to hear any tips and sources from people here experienced in it. I have access to a 4th axis machine and mill table at work. I want to either flute or jewel my rifle bolts.

What did you use for polishing compound? I hear Cratex sticks but am unsure of a source for Nova Scotia.

My assumption is a 1/4 rod and around 100 grit.

I often used a small steel brush with 120 grit and cutting oil... go lightly so the brush doesn't expand under too much pressure and high speed...I had small 'o' rings around the brush too. I count about 5 sec for each 'twirl'...

Guntech posted this before when asked and it works well. I've done a few bolts for myself and friends and made a simple jig to index the bolt.

I also use the brushes and abrasive paste, but I use heatshrink to hold it together.
I got the brushes from Brownell's years ago, but I'm thinking that some of the little brushes that come in Dremel kits might work.
120 grit valve grinding compound works well.

Small piece of wooden dowel and lapping compound . Used this method for years . You can turn the dowel to any diameter you prefer

Yup. Dowels at the lumber yard, valve grinding compound at the auto supply store (or used to be, maybe they don't do that anymore). Clover grinding paste used to be the most common, if I remember correctly. - dan
