About 18 years after I left the Canadian Army reserve I just got in today's mail my Canadian Service Medal for 12 years service. I never bothered to apply since I believe that was supposed to be done by the Unit, but a friend who is a Regular Force Officer say I should apply for it and about 6 months later I got a piece of jewelry from the Government .

Nothing compared to my friends who served in Yugoslavia and Afghanistan, but still nice to have.
 
Hey JP. You should never compare your career in the mil to others.
This is well deserved whether you feel like you do or not.
Recognition that you paid your dues as a citizen of the great dominion of canada.
Some of my brothers have had no recognition (via medal) for their service/deployment in Afghanistan and only havr CDs on their chests.
And sometimes its the luck of the draw getting sent over or deployed anywhere.

The Base Commander used that line on me when he pinned mine on.

Got a little puckered looking, when I told him it wasn't undetected, they were just too lazy to do the paperwork up on any of it.

IIRC there was one hanging on display at the Air Museum in Trenton with either 4 or 5 bars on it. That's a LONG service!

That statement JpSpc is the absolute truth and should be noted more often.
The people who sit around and judge gongs (or lack of gongs) are 99% of the time absolute thuds in the service. Or never served.
Some of the absolute worst soldiers I ever saw or dealt with cant wait to wear their medals and puff up their chests like they are/were super soldiers when in reality they should have been dishonourably discharged.

The "apply for your own CD" stuff is total BS.

The unit chiefs track this stuff religiously and it's in your personnel file, and in the monitor mass system as well, so eligibility can be automated.

It's a total cluster that these aren't happening automatically.

Two of my guys passed their deadlines by over 5 years. As soon as I found out, the chief got it sorted for them. As it should be.
 
My Reg Force friend was great he put me in direct contact with the correct guy at DND and I filed the forms and I got the Medal. I own him a beer for sure!

Reminds me of picking up my DEU so I can receive mine next week (2 years late, no big deal) :p

Merlot, now that's a fine CGN name. Last fall we attended the Festival of the Grape in Oliver which always involves a grape stomping contest to see who can generate the highest volume of juice within a given time. My favorite team was a group of gals wearing T shirts that read; "You had me at Merlot". They produced a lot of juice and all the jiggling and jumping was pretty fun too.;)

If I ever wanted to change my CGN name I might just go with Malbec. :cool:
 
Congratulations! Its well deserved, and its too bad that you had to apply for it yourself. Something of that significance should be done for you.
 
Purchase a 'miniature' and wear it with your 'Tux' .... Congratulations - That is terrific!

(BTW always have a little story for the youngsters when they ask about it --- it can help encourage them to join cadets or the reserve .. or perhaps try the Regular military)

took a little over 2 years for mine as well.. pretty funny that a tour medal arrived in theater about 90 ish days in. but a CD takes 2 years lol
