I have some 180 gr plated ca pro bullets. The only load info for the powder I have is for 180 jhp sierras. The min max is 4.9. To 5.6 hrs of unique.

My question is because the bullets I have on hand have a thinner layer of copper than the one listed in my manual should I start on the lower end testing or can I test loads up to the max listed ?

Thanks

You might get some leading if the velocity/pressure is too high for the plated bullets but if they are seated to the same depth it should be safe to do.

You aren't going to get any leading with a plated bullet that's the point of them... Campro bullets have a much thicker plating than most others and can be pushed a lot harder than other plated bullets. That was straight from a campro distributor and my experience backs it up.

Do you need max power? Or do you want accuracy and faster recovery?

if the latter, start at the minimum, or less, and work up in 0.3gr increments. You may find one load works much better than others.

That's helpful I wondered about the plating having switched from Berrys to Campro...

due to the thick plating of campro bullets I always recommend using jacketed data over lead data for load development. I also always start in the middle of the data range and work up or down from there depending on what I'm trying to achieve. To little powder can be just as dangerous (more sometimes) as to much powder.

I have guys shooting the campro's in their 9mm major open guns and a few shooting them with full .357 and .44mag loads out of carbines, so they don't have the issue where they come apart at higher velocities and pressures that some plated bullets experience.

I've read about people having issues when trying to push the .429" Campro bullets to 444 Marlin velocities but that's a whole other thing.

Not to change direction on this thread but does anyone ever use ww571 for 40sw. I just found some in the back of the powder locker and was wondering if it might work.
