I am wondering if finding one of these is an impossible task or are there still some kicking around? I was thinking it would be a nice addition to the collection to have an old one or one that would have been issued to the military. When I search for it all that comes up is new Colt 1911's.

They are around for sure, auctions, used shops, the EE here, the ####### buy and sell all have them come up occasionally. Patience is key with the older guns, they come around though

Good ones have got quite expensive, not so good " shooter grade", can be found reasonable.
Last one I had was a well used military ,about 30% finish, worked fine , well under a grand.

Invented in 1904 by JMB.
Manufactured by Colt and adopted by the US Army in 1911... thus the name.
First introduced to combat in 1916

There were Canadian officers who took examples to war with them in 1914. There was a CGN thread not long ago digging into that history.

Later, JM Browning had to work around the 1911 patents he had sold to Colt and come up with different ways to design a pistol for the FN Hi Power.
