Hi everyone, I'm John.

A little personal blurb :
I'm from the GTA, Whitby, but I go to school in Peterborough. I'm currently and older student (29) with one year left in my program (massage therapy - $$$). I've always been interested in military history, and due in large part to that, I've been facinated by firearms. I finally took the PAL courses this summer, and am waiting for by PAL (restricted) card to get here (I grew a handle bar moustache just for the photo).
Other reasons for wanting a firearm (aside from military collections) are mostly due to thinking that in our modern times, in a worst case scenario, knowing how to handle and operate firearms would be a great equalizer. I'm not suggesting that I think WW3 or a zombie apocalypse is around the corner, but as they say, I'd rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.
One of the bigger issues I'm facing is that I'm a lifelong righty: Swinging a stick, writing, kicking, wiping- anything. But it turns out I'm left eye dominant. I intend on initially putchasing a cheap semi-auto .22 (marlin 60?), just so I can figure how to use a long barrel left handed before I invest any serious money into a rifle (I cheated in class and pretended to be Right eyed...
I also plan on buying a pistol soon. I've been to a few local gunshops, and I'm pretty decided on an M&P 9 Pro.
The last thing that's sparked my interest is gun refinishing. I'm interested in learning how to do it, and I guess disassemble/reassemble firearms as well.
So, that's my basic firearm story.
If anyone out there is interested in having a firearm apprentice/protege feel free to get in touch with me. I spend a lot of time on gun forums (e-gun.net) and am glad to find a Canadian site. I'll probably be spending more time here, since I'm getting a little tired of the extreme right wing american political fanatics on most US gun forums.

Thanks for reading, and I hope to talk to you soon,

John

Welcome John... What club do you plan to shoot that M&P9? Lots of people will give any advice you ask for and then some... BTW there is plenty of right wing here too but not quite as bad as in the US forums...

Jeff

Always nice to hear from a GTA CGN'er  - if your weekends are free, I often make Sunday "pilgrimages" to Silverdale, right from North York...

Hey Jeff.
Right now there's a handgun/.22 range just near my house, The Marksmen's Club. Since I'll be living in Peterborough for a year, beginning in Sept, I'm also looking at the Peterborough Revolver and Pistol Club. That being said, I'm not exactly sure where I'll be in a year's time, so I'll probably be joining a second club then.

RE Rightwingers: I'm okay with rightys and leftys (Wendal Clark or Russ Courtnall?) as I find myself agreeing to certain ideas of both camps. EX:

Civilian gun restrictions: Good
CCW: Good
Limited Mag sized: Bad
Tough on violent Crime: Good
Tough on minor soft drug offences: Bad

It's the extreme ones (usually blinded by the paranoia of the other) that tires me out.

Hey Cyclone,

My weekends are usually free, so if that's an invite to accompany you to the range, I will gladly accept.

Civilian gun restrictions: Good
CCW: Good
Limited Mag sized: Bad
Tough on violent Crime: Good
Tough on minor soft drug offences: Bad

It's the extreme ones (usually blinded by the paranoia of the other) that tires me out.

Unfortunately, at least in Canada's case, all the Paranoia has proven to be true. People said we were just being paranoid that Bill-68 would lead to confiscation. We were right. People said we were being paranoid that the registry would be breached to create a shopping list for criminals. It has been many times.

I think you will find that most people on here will agree with the following:

Civilian gun restrictions: Extremely BAD.
Gun Licensing required for EVERYONE who wants a gun: moderate.
Firearm Classifications: unacceptable.
Firearm reclassification from non-restricted/restricted to prohib: call for war.
CCW: Mandatory
Limited Mag size: criminal
Tough on violent Crime: A must
Tough on minor soft drug offences: moderate to required

Where there are drugs with money from ill-gotten gains, there will be illegal guns with people willing to use them. The minor drug offenders had to buy the drugs somewhere, and if need be they need to be dealt with harshly to get to the higher ups.

Hey Prestwich, I'm sure I'm an extreme lefty compared to most here, but I don't know why anyone in Canada needs a fully auto assault rifle.
My main conern regarding gun registry is in the case of foreign invasion rather than losing firearms to the government. I don't like the thought of an invading military gaining access that kind of info, a copy of which is probably, as we speak, sitting on some MP's girlfriend's coffee table. It pretty much would debilitate any sort of militia or guerilla resitance, and probably lead to the immediate internment or execution of those registered. Although my lack of fear of our government confiscating is due to my younger age, and not knowing "what it was like before".

Regarding soft drugs (ie Marijuana), I think they're similar in effect and purpose to alcohol and tobacco. If people want to use them, farmers should be growing and selling and the government should be taxing it like crazy, just as they do with cigarettes and booze. It would cut out organized crime (international or domestic), and provide income and tax revenue.

Having said all this, I'm glad I got all my political soapboxing out of the way early in my CGN career.

From this point on... Zombies and guns.

welcome

Welcome aboard John. Lots of people I know are righty and left eye dominant. My brother is a righty but shoots left.

As far as owning and firing guns, there is nothing apocalytic about it, although it wouldn't help to be prepared.

I understand how tiresome it must be to read "right-wing' politicizing on the American gun forums, especially since we do not share their Constitution.

American gun owners, more concerned with their own Constitution than most Americans, and certainly most Canadians, discuss how it has been ignored or misinterpreted by all branches of government since the 1930's. They're particularly incensed with the current administration and its running roughshod over Amendment 4 and 10. And The First Amendment if they get the opportunity.

On this forum, politically aware members want to know what is happening with The Second Amendment. We care because our right to keep and bear arms also exists, although without a statement such as the Second Amendment.

For example, the phrase "shall not be infringed" has been trimmed back. We have the same situation here. What happens in The States and Great Britain can be used to our advantage when we fight for our civil RKBA.

Hey guys.

I'll probably visit the Orono club. It's less than 10 km from where I live now. I may wait until after the school year though. I hate driving the 115 (that's why I'm moving there this year), so I'm looking for something in/around PTB. It seems like a great club though. I read the whole history, and website. It sounds like a classy place (not top hat and monacle classy). And hey, if either of you feel like showing me around, I wouldn't object.

@ Cyclone:
Thanks, I'll definately take you up on that offer in the near future.

RE: the US gun people
I realize it's some of the close minded, and proudly racist stuff on there that bothers me. Reading the forums @ CGN and talking with some of the members has really impressed. A lot of people on here seem much more aware (politically and socially), and think more critically.

Newbie: I'm glad to hear it's not too daunting and impossible as it seems. Long guns just feel awkward on the left. I've been fake shooting right-handed since I was a kid!

I'm getting a little tired of the extreme right wing american political fanatics on most US gun forums.

Welcome aboard I hope you stick around, read and more importantly it appears LEARN!!!

That said.....here starts lessons 1 and 2

You should know..........That "RIGHT WING" is the only damned thing keepiong guns in Civilian hands.

Lefties would be all to glad to see you disarmed in an instant!! There is a reason that the United States is the greatest Democracy in world history. Of course that has been diminished over the past few decades through the efforts of the LEFT that have taken an earstwhile great nation and are on the verge of bringing it to its knees. Of course Canadian leftists and Eurotrash are standing by cheering while ignoring that their own walls are crashing down upon them as they have aslo weakened their own foundations.

but I don't know why anyone in Canada needs a fully auto assault rifle.
.

Are you free next week some time? I would appreciate the opportunity to visit you and evalulate your lifestyle. I will then be in a better position to determine what exactly your "NEEDS" are.

Off the top of my head you mention you live Whitby and or Peterborough. From that I will assume you live in a house or an appartment. There is obviously no NEED for you to have such lavish living conditions. You do NEED shelter of some sort however. Thus I would propose that we move you and others that think as you do in terms of NEEDS into a barrack like structure. Say 100 beds per room per building.

I will futher assume that you like to eat good food..........I mean who doesn't! But then again do you really NEED good tasting foods? I am certain that your needs can be satisfied with a bland tasting gruel of some sort. All the vitamins and minerals a body needs minus the flavour of course.

Then we have your particular fashion sense............Do you have more than two outfits?
Of course nobody NEEDS as many clothes as the average Canadian wears.

I propose we issue you one pair of sturdy shoes, 5 pairs of socks, 5 underware and two pairs of grey overalls. That should be sufficient for your NEEDs.........

So.................any time you are available we can conduct your inspections. One that is out of the way and you agree to all of my demands we can move on you YOU determining MY needs.

Deal??

Edited to add.........

I thought you might want to read about the world I invision for you and those who think like you. It is an easy read and you need not spend a dime to read your future.

It might take you an hour or two to read so please set aside the time...........

http://www.noblesoul.com/orc/texts/anthem/complete.html

That is the future you are striving towards. Let us all hope that we can change your path.

Thanks, Storm. I held back a bit in my post. You didn't take that route. Good on you.

BTW, I was all set to buy a place in The U.S., but now I'm waiting to see what the elections in November brings. That will be the biggest fork in the road since Roosevelt started ruining the place.

jkrealm, I echo Storm's sentiment. Learn up about the political situations in Canada, The U.S. and Great Britain. If you still have time, check out India, South Africa and Australia. The English-speaking world is under heavy civilian disarmament attack from socialist disarmament specialists hiding behind the skirts of The U.N. All the tinpot dictators at the UN love them .Our own civilian disarmament honey is probably going to work full time for IANSA. The previous head actually told gun owners to get another hobby and has posted a plan to disarm us all.

If and when they come for your last legal gun, a single-shot .22 rifle they let you have, think about how so many gun owners were too busy or too liberal to get involved.

Thanks for replying guys, I always appreciate some intelligent discourse.
As I said earlier, I don't have anything against the left or right, but I find the extremists on both sides equally tiring. On these types of forums though, that cater to gun owners, I'm exponentially more likely to encounter the Right variety. I'm sure if I was on PETAs forums I'd be just as bombarded and sick of those Lefty hippies. As I said, it's more the racist and prejudiced views that bothered me.

I'm new to the gun ownership thing, and I hope no one mistakes my comments as inflammatory or personal attacks. Usually when I ask questions (like what do you need a fully auto rifle for?), I'm looking for actual reasons for owning one, not trying to discredit those who would want to. Would you own one because you think they're cool, because you are a collector of militaria, or for home defense?
Also, from what I know (and I openly admit to not being the most educated on the matter), there is nothing in the Canadian constitution/charter of rights that establishes the right to bear arms. The US has the 2nd amendmant, which is fine. It grants them that right. In Canada, I've always thought it similar to owning and operating a car: a privaledge, not a right.
I'll also be sure to check out that link and get back to you.
