I can guess the answer already, but have to ask:

With a Winchester 1894 30-30 will it damage anything if I try, with an empty rifle, to work the lever 1-handed like John Wayne? I'm not sure which movie it was, but he held the rifle out, and sort of threw the barrel downwards while holding the lever still, then brought the barrel back up.

It's not for any tactical or hunting or self-defence purpose, just looks fun.

I used to do it, and twirl revolvers. Watched too many westerns not to try, and got pretty good at it. But it wears on your hand after awhile. I know you said unloaded, and that's good. I've often wondered how it would work on a live cycle. With a 94, I always figured the cartridge would pop up and jam. Of course I was never brave or foolish enough to try it.

Wayne was just an amateur.. his was only a down and up. Schwarteneger was better. He did a complete 360 while riding a motorcycle in Terminator 2 i think. Dont you just love hollywood.. ;)

Arnold just copied that move from Chuck Conners in The Rifleman. If you recall that late 50's/early 60's Western, Chuck would twirl a Winnie Lever around like it was a YoYo! Great action on an otherwise (by today's standards) dull show.

It won't hurt the rifle a bit, it will hurt your hand after a few times.
Yes, it will chamber a live round, I've done it with dummy rounds, when I was younger, and interested in such things. Amazingly, completely twirling the rifle like Chuck Connors will also chamber a round, if you can do it without dropping the rifle.
Gives new meaning to controlled feed.
Don't be an idiot,
DO NOT ATTEMPT WITH LIVE ROUNDS!

Are you guys talkin about doing this with just a regular ole 94 or the large loop Winnie's?

I always thought The Duke used the large loop guns for this purpose?

And thats a +1 on what JYC said about being a dumb ass for trying that with a live round, I know nobody said they did but I really hope you guys wouldn't be dumb enough to try, good way to lose a foot or worse, your life.

Methinks it was a Winchester 1892... not a 1894 or '94.... but carry on boys... ;)

Just don't conk yerselves on the noggin when yer doing it... :D

i've done it a few times with a 94 trapper and a regular lever- with DUMMY rounds and it seemed to chamber ok- but it was 44 mag, not 30-30- i don't know if the length of the ctgs made a diff

thanks, it's just for s&g's but I didn't want to break anything.

With more thought, it might have been Big Jake. I'll have to re-watch now:)

I heard that the Duke praciticed quite a bit to get the swing perfected. By the way, Was the Duke a true gun guy?

In fact, the Duke, and the Rifleman both used 1892 Winchesters. John Wayne prefered the 38-40. I'm guessing that the rifleman series used either the 44-40, or ther 38-40.
However, the '94 works just as well, at least in 30-30. It's only a bit longer and heavier.

Again, PLAY SAFE!

Hey MD tried it with the Savage? :D

Ow, it kind of hurts.

Helmet, his real name was Miriam and he was more of a house-coat and pipe-smoking guy, but yea he brought his own revolvers for the movies he was in. I heard.
