After a lot of friendly and helpful advice from our own Batman and Robin :D, Richard and Ian, my build has been completely changed. All the components have been ordered now and it'll be onto the game for the next few months

Action: Rem 700 short action, already trued, courtesy of my buddy

Barrel: 30" Krieger barrel in 6mm, 1-8" twist, 1.250" straight blank

Trigger: Jewell BR

Stock: Robertson GBF stock (four months wait time... I'm sure it's worth the wait though, 'cos it'll look so cool  LOL)

Scope: Sightron III 8-32x56mm

Mounts: TPS 20 MOA base with Leupold PRW high rings (may be changed)

Will be chambered to shoot 105gr Berger VLDs. Gonna have it no-neck turn for Lapua brass.

Mick McPhee, the preferred gunsmith for Richard and Ian, will handle this job as well. We had a good chat on the phone and with the sound recommendations given by many, I have complete faith in Mick that he'll put together an amazing rifle for me.

Just in time for the spring season. Time to bust out the BR rimfire and get practicing, so I won't embarrass myself at the comps again

Will bump/update this thread when I get my rifle. Keep waiting!! :D

You might want to consider the Sightron 6 x 24 or 8 x 32 scope with the dot reticle instead of the 4200. Just an alternative. The Bushnell didn't have enough reticle adjustment to use a 20 MOA rail on my rifles to sight in at 300 meters. I had to change to a 0 MOA rail. Steve

That's silmilar set up I have right now except got a SSS stock and SSS trigger. I'm just waiting to get my barrels. Haven't decided on a scope but NF or Sightron is on my radar. But looking forward to competing in some F-Class event next year maybe I'll see you at the range.

Instead of the 20MOA rail you may consider the 20MOA Zee ring inserts. That way you could move it up or down without having to always remove the base.

Give a range report when you have it all put together.

Pepper,
I agree,an 8-32 probably would serve you better in the long run. When it comes to glass, guns will come and go, but good glass just stays with you.
It's hard to beat the 6BR for pure enjoyment, accuracy and ease of reloading.
It can be as competitive as the rest of the catridge choices and has taken wood even at the 1000yrd line on many occassion.Great place to start.
As far as a 3 way butt system,to me,it's only of value if you are going to be shooting hard hold and you need to fine tune the fit. If shooting off a rest vs pod,a lot of shooters tend to shoot more "free recoil" with little body contact with rifle as possible. They "build" the rifle to suit (fit) themselves and do not use adjustable butt or cheeckrest. However some shooters aren't really sure what build would suit them best and want as much adjustment in the stock to try out various fits.
Not a clear cut answer ,but if running on bags with a fairly light recoiling rifle, consider what the Benchrest builds are like.
Just a thought.
Welcome to the F'er's world!!!
Gord

I think it looks good to me.
Scope selection should be fine. I use a 4200 elite 4-16x40 on a 15moa and it zeros on my 6mmBR. Although I did have a tiny trouble with the Elite 8-32-40. It was about 5 MOA high at 100.
Make sure to post some progress pics of your build and a reange report once it is all put together.

RP,

I knew we had you by the tail when I met you!! I am thrilled to see you taking the leap. The important part is to get started.

Gord is a helluvan F-Class shooter and really knows his stuff. After chatting with him on the phone, I definitely look forward to meeting him one day. I think he could even kick CyaN1de's butt, so I'm thinking of giving him a free barrel if he'll just come out west and do it.

Knowing your stature, I don't think a 3-way is absolutely essential but I personally LOVE them. They put the butt in a very comfortable position for me, but then I sprinkle guys your size on my toast. They make it possible to make the length of pull fit you perfectly.

Ian Robertson is a real pro and will kit you out with the best kit on the market. If it were me, I'd get the 3-way, but Gord is right... for you, I think you could get along without it. BTW, Have Ian show you pictures of his GBF stock for F-Class... That is as ####ographic as it gets.

Come out and shoot with us some more!

Heck, I'll give you a gun with a real barrel to use to put you on the paper(I'm kidding. Shilen are good barrels :) ) No more getting your tail waxed by 10 year old girls!

You're already one of us! You're just wanting to wear a different dress to the prom now.

Thanks for all the advice, everyone. :)

Can I have a free barrel too? :D

Ouch... for the record, that girl has 3 more years of shooting experience than I do :p

So... F-Class guys wear dresses to competitions? :nest:

Hey Matt,
Bob told me he was going to try the "Kilt Advantage" but told me he was advised that
you can only use spikes less than 2 inches and they could not cause"damage" to the mounds.:)
Ian,
Thanks for the offer and compliment.
I am hoping to do at least 1 trip west of Kenora this coming year.Hoping that the boys are able to put the Canadian F Class Open together.Failing that,I really would love to see the mountains again.Been a long time for me.
As soon as schedules are published for all the matches,I'll be trying to figure out what, when and how I''ll pay for it all.Watch for "funding sale" on EE.
In the meantime, winter is my brass prep and build season.I lay low ,heal up and
try to catch up on housework left all summer.
Sorry to drift off the post focus.
Winter well
Gord

What do you guys think? I'm not looking to win nationals, just having some fun with it in some casual F-Class competitions.

My $0.02

buy a 700 PSS or 5R in 308 and shoot a season with it.

Building guns is fun.

But it's funner getting the right stuff that fits you and the type of shooting you will do the first time around.

Add some weight to the stock with shot and epoxy, add a vertical adjustable pad with removeable spacers if you want, maybe bed it, and go burn powder. As a plus, a 700 in 308 will be legal in the BCRA Sniper match.

Watch and talk to other shooters. Try different stocks, scopes, and rests (I have yet to have another shooter NOT insist you try his, as it is surely the best available).

When you make your decisions, if you decide to switch to 6BR, you have a good platform to start with. If you decide to go whole hog to a custom (Stiller, etc), you have a complete rifle that will be sellable, or will be usable as a backup/loaner/spare.

Either way, you won;t be looking at other options that "If I'd seen that earlier" would be better for your purposes. That's a lot of money you're looking at spending having attended one clinic and never shot a match. Not that that is a bad thing, or that I find fault in your build, just that you are not taking advantage of seeing a much braoder profile of options before bucking up.

rgv, I appreciate your sentiments, and to a certain degree I agree with you. But I'm pretty dead set on a 6BR. Getting a 308 or a 223, which I have considered before, I'm ultimately going to sell it anyway and lose out. Besides, I have the reloading components for the 6BR so I already have a head start.

Go big or go home, am I right? :D

P.S. Ian, email sent to you.

I know Brian has dabbled in the factory rifle department and actually did very well. Being a precision rifle forum, I tend to lean towards the pursuit of this very topic. I do not consider wasting hundreds/thousands of dollars on shooting factory sporting rifles to be a prudent intermediate step unless it is all you can afford to do, or you are still very undecided as to what precision game you want to play.

One will never become the best shooter he/she can be if his/her rifle is incapable of true precision results. A bullet hole 3" away from where I want it is an error. Was the error mine? (Did I not see the mirage or the wind?) Was the error in my load? was the error simply within the degree of tolerances for that factory gun?

You can never learn to be a good quarter minute long range shooter with a 1 minute gun.

I fully agree that one shouldn;t handicap himself out of the gate. Having said that, at 300m at MDRG, a good 5R or PSS is not that much of a handicap.

All I'm really saying, is that there is no reason NOT to get a bit more exposure before committing to a caliber/platform

FWIW, I sold my 204 already :D I hate how the bullet blows up in mid-air, especially in a certain F-Class clinic.

My 7WSM is still running strong, accurate as hell and already took 3 animals with it (bull moose, mulie buck, black bear) within one year.

I tend to believe in the school of thought that says, "Buy the best you can afford". With that said, I think I'm taking a bit of a different route with the build, we'll see what happens. Still trying to source out parts, obviously. The action is the hardest part for me to find, I'm thinking.
