While I was getting ready for my deer hunt, I sent off a bunch of parts to have his salt-bath nitride treatment. I absolutely love the finish of these parts! I sent everything but the receiver, rear sights and I forgot to send the bolt stop and the clip guide. I'll fit those in on the next batch.

The barrel is one of his 5R/20 barrels that I built my T44E4 receiver with and the rest of the parts are from my old M1A standard that I stripped off the action to build my T44E4. All the parts were used GI parts with the exception of the bolt. The Bolt was an arsenal repack. I built the rifle first, cut the chamber to desired headspace, polished the chamber and lapped the bolt lugs to the receiver.

I'm guessing that if I run light to moderate loads of 125's through 168's, this barrel should give me match accuracy for about 7,000 rounds with a serviceable life of around 12,000 rounds. We'll see though. Current round count is around 115.

I'll do some comparisons with my M25 which has the un-treated 5R/20 barrel and the same headspace cut with the same reamer. I'll compare velocity, accuracy and cleaning results. I broke in my barrel and Jon said it was perfect before he treated the barrel. Since these parts came off a used M1A standard, the gas plug and piston already had rust and pitting before I sent them in. The process eats away all the rust from the surface, so there is a rough appearance on the parts that had rust. They were serviceable though and the rust should be stopped now.

I already installed the barrel and timed it perfectly. I'm just waiting on an operating rod guide and a hammer pin to finish the rifle again.

Tony, reading your posts has a distinctly calming effect, seeing just how good you are to your rifle.
I hate to say it, but my "girls" don't get treated this well...and I'm ashamed. :)

That finish looks nice, I'll have to read more about the process.

Good luck on your hunt!

Very nice, this process hardens the metal correct?

Here are some informative reads on Melonite/Tennifer/SBN, which are all pretty much the same thing...

My barrel was made of 410 stainless steel, which is supposedly, already harder than 416 stainless steel.

Here are some pics of the operating rod as well as a treated trigger group next to an untreated trigger group.

My two remaining SEI builds have the same finish... I think they call it M80HT.

Whatever it's called, know that it's great!
It stays clean longer, and it's easier to clean than other finishes.

We send some parts out for liquid nitride treatment at my work. Its pretty sweet. Wear resistance improvement is incredible. Diameters seem to grow by .0001"-.0004".

There is a place in Vancouver and another in Edmonton we've had good luck with. I'm happy to provide a referral if anyone wants one; best to send me a private message.

Does the finish affect the dimensions of the parts?

If done properly, it should not. If done improperly, things can warp; even receivers. Make sure the company that does it knows how to control parts expansion and warpage. I get the last two parts tomorrow and then my rifle will be put back together. I can't wait for a range trip!

Back in business!

I spent the day soaking all my parts in CLP and doing a final cleaning to get any residual salts from the nitriding out of all the crevices. I got everything put back together with a fresh coat of grease/oil on all applicable surfaces. Any "rust color" you see is C5-A copper anti-seize.
