So awhile ago I bought a JR carbine in .45 acp

I had done quite a bit of reading and found that the 9mm was very reliable however the .45 was problematic.
I bought the .45 anyhow cause that's how I roll. besides I've fixed lots of guns, how hard could it be?

So first trip to the range proved all those internetz people right. FTF city! (insert emote here if that's your thing) 10 shots at 25 meters using my elbows as a rest was one ragged little hole however!
folks at JRC blame glock mags cuz we all know how unreliable glocks are. Twist your spring like this and that blah blah.
I did notice that the glock mag puts a whole bunch of pressure at the front of the follower and not so much at the back.

Many of the FTF cases had been punctured by the nub that protrudes from the bottom of the bolt damaging my cases beyond reloadability. (spellcheck sez that aint a word but I think its wrong)
tried both factory ball and my reloads, same same.

In conversation with folks at JRC they have a reliability package that they want to send me. this consists of a new mag well with a different feed ramp bolted in. Also a new buffer and a thicker nylon disk.

so a package arrives in the mail but I'm fighting a losing battle with a win 94 in .357 I bought to console myself with.

A couple days ago I put the new parts on. The new feed ramp is more robust and the mag well holds the magazine tighter and maybe has the rounds more aligned to the bore.

To the Range today, what a gong show! I got my truck stuck, I cut my hand shoveling the snow from the range, left the red dot on from last time I used it and the battery is dead, forgot my brass catcher and wore runners instead of boots.

However, the factory glock mag fed flawless! the 27 round aftermarket mag less than that but the spring is pretty weak for the top ten rounds compared to the glocks.

my group opened up a bit to 18 inches without having the little red dot in the optical sight. have to do something about that.

Well, it is a rifle that I really wanted to like. I am very happy that the folks at JRC made the effort to fix its problems and send the parts to me quickly and free of charge.

If you own on of these I would recommend you get the replacement parts if you are experiencing difficulty with it.

So with the 'fix' in place this thing runs like a top? How many rounds have you put though it with the replacement parts?

I think there must be a hex on these JRC .45 upgrade kits. I was at the range testing mine yesterday (didn't go as well as yours), but I fell flat on my ass three times. Dumped loaded mags in snow all over the place, maybe I can blame failures on that.. :)

After the first wipeout, I made a concerted effort to ensure that it didn't happen again - so it only happened twice. On the bright side no blood, and my truck didn't get stuck for a change!

Well, I only ran 100 rounds in it since I put the fix kit in it. Like I said the factory mag worked good with the heavy spring but the aftermarket 27/10 still had a FTF on third or fourth round most times.
I will disassemble the mag and put a spacer block in the bottom to increase the tension. Also I will look at polishing the feed ramp a bit.
I'm going to go out again tomorrow and run some more in it and make sure. Ill let you know how it goes.

Jody,
I bought a JR a few months ago and although mine is in .40 cal. I think I still could offer some technical advise. I ran a number of tests with it and actually made the carbine shoot fairly reliably. First, the rifle has very tight overall tolerances, which is very good for accuracy but also prone to feeding jamming due to the variance in ammo dimensions. I reload myself so I've tested different case brands and also different powders. As for bullets, they have to be at least partly rounded so they would feed. FMJ round nose or flat point. Next, the rifle likes rather not maximum power load, it appears that a violent recoil just makes the feeding even worse so test several different loads but do it with all other components the same. Then there is the casing brand. Try different brands and see which one works best. For example, my rifle likes Speers and Federals but won't digest R.P's. Yours may like something else but this is in principle how she works. Next thing is, the magazine is just a hair loose in the well, in any other rifle I wouldn't even worry about it but in this one it is just another not helping factor. I taped my magazine with a couple of layers of masking tape on the back side and made it a little tighter in the well and I've noticed a bit of difference. Then the whole bolt assembly needs to be well lubricated so it runs with maximum smoothness and no jerking. I also think that after some 1000 or so rounds things will improve a bit because all those tight sharp edges will grind off and the mechanism will generally break-in. The last thing is the ejection port, I think it's too small for reliable ejecting, especially for such large case as .45 but I can't help you with that. If you don't reload, just try different ammo and the other mentioned improvements. I think the JR is by concept good idea but not enough development and testing was done before it was sent to production. Please, feel free to send any feedback how your journey goes. I would be curious to see if you've done something I did not and I could improve my rifle.

cold windy day at the range

I just got back from the range, before going out I polished the feed ramp and completely disassembled the rifle right down to the firing pin.
I have to say I really like how easy this rifle is to disassemble into components.
Battery for the red dot? check! Brass catcher? check! ammo, target, rest, yup gtg.

All set up for some shooting. Using the truncated cone because, well I got a whole pile of them and if it works with them it will work with anything.

First 20 rounds no failures or banged up brass. I took some more carful shots at the corners every few magazines. All corners are 10 shot groups.

No FTF with the truncated cone bullets. no damaged brass. I will keep it for now.

I will clean it tomorrow

Ok I remember posting pictures being easier last time I did it, hmm
