Just wanted to get a little feedback from some of the members.
I'm considering a JR Carbine, and am torn between 9mm and 40S&W.
I'm looking primarily for a fun plinker that I can use for small game (groundhogs, squirrels etc.)
I've heard the reviews and picked up on the idea the 9mm is a little more reliable at this point.
9mm is a little more cost effective for plinking, and with the right load should be effective for small game. But, is that cost effectiveness lost when it comes to reloading?

Give me your thoughts, reviews and ammo deals.

Big difference in bulk ammo costs.

If you plan on reloading, get the '40'
If you don't plan on reloading, get the '9'

That is the criteria that determined my decision. :)

Agree with the above and would like to add the 9mm is less "buggy" than the .40 at the moment.

I was planning on reloading. I'm already set for 9 but would just need 40 dies.
Any recommendations for bullets? FMJ or HP?
Are people shooting lead or FMJ?

I shoot cast... 175gr from Bullet Barn; because I can buy them local (no shipping & cheap). The rifling is conventional (i.e. Not Polygonal).

I reloaded for 9mm way back, but felt if I am going through all the process anyway I might as well go bigger. I like the .40S&W. This summer I plan on working out an awesome load for the JR Carbine. I'm using 800x.

I got a 9mm when the first came out and I reload for it, it's way cheaper than buying bulk ammo for it. I cast my own boolits and it cost me around $95 for 1k of 9mm.

I'd be interested in hearing your load stats. I load 700x for 38 and 9mm. I've had a great time playin' around with the 38's, the 9's don't leave much room for improvement.

It shoots just as accurate with jacketed bullets. I have been using 4grns of unique with a lee TL-356-124-2R boolit cast with wheel weights and water dropped. I shoot them as cast, lubed with liquid alox and have had no leading yet.

Interesting. And you are loading for about $95/1000. Now that is sweet!

Get the 9mm and don't look back I have over 1000 rnds through mine also some home loads and cast with no problems and it's shocked me at how accurate it is

I've heard that they solved most if not all the feed problems with the 9mm. 9mm is cheaper in bulk and similar in reload. The 40s&w offers more punch and possilbly more flexibility to reload.

The thing is, does the 40s&w offer that much more to warrant the added growing pains and feed issues that are already solved in the 9mm?

What about extra mags? Sources? Costs?

Range of a 9mm.... I can hit a propane tank at 150 off hand.. It doesn't penetrate but puts one hell of a dent in it.

Thats not with a JR, but with a Thureon Defense.. I suspect the JR would be the same. Hikock45 has a video shooting the Thureon (9mm) at an 18inch gong at 230 yards. I'm guessing that would be pretty close to the effective range of a 9mm.

For me, it would be a no brainer.. 9mm... These carbines are ammo eaters and the lower cost of 9mm will save you tons over the long run. I can easily shoot 250 - 300 rounds in a session.

I hear ya! 250-300rds an outing sounds about right. A 10rd mag allows you to cook off alot of rounds in short order. At roughly $10/100rd difference between 9mm and 40s&w it adds up pretty quick.

Hey guys I'm new to the JR carbine scene, but I did have an issue with some Winchester 147 grain factory 9mm rounds jamming once with the round unspent as the bolt jammed with only a small portion of the round exposed, I was unable to clear this live round myself having broken the small handle that is used to action the bolt in the attempt (perhaps with less then the required patience) and found it necessary to see a gunsmith to clear the live round/replace bolt handle with a new one sent from JR Carbine at no charge, (they actually sent two with free shipping, which made me wonder if this is a common problem?) since then I've heard a little on the net about the 9mm model JR Carbines requiring an upgraded buffer tube and possible more, I'm a bit of a rookie when it comes to these semi auto black rifles (this is my first having owned only a Ruger 10/22 in the past) and I realize there are many with much greater knowledge and experience on this forum then I, the gunsmith felt that the shoulder on the brass due to the greater size/weight bullet was the reason for the very stubborn jam and told me about the ugraded buffer tube design that may be available from the JR factory as now the action does not always like to slide forward as it should when pulled to the most rearward position and requires a slight nudge to action forward and that I should request this newly redesigned buffer tube from the JR factory, as it may be a helpful uppgrade to solve this issue, before I call them for this request could any of you comment on any experiences etc, that would better prepare me to speak with the factory so hopefully I can receive any and all available improved ugrades if in fact there are more then just the redesigned buffer tube to make this carbine more reliable, it did function well with the 115 grain factory American Eagle rounds and as there are few black rifles available in Canada that are unrestricted especially for around the $1,000 range which unfortunately is my budget at this time, I would really like to get this rifle working flawlessly if possible, any comments/thoughts would be greatly appreciated, Thankyou in advance for your time in this matter

I don't know but I wouldn't buy anything that name "Just Right." Just Right car, Just Right jeans, Just Right sunglasses, and etc. It sounds sooo tacky and corny. I don't know lol
