I've been meaning to post a few words about the new shooting mat I've been using from JSA Tactical.

I saw pics of the first prototype on their facebook page and contacted JSA about purchasing one. Ed (Skullboy) was very friendly throughout our correspondance and despite the mats not being a regular production item (at the time) said he would do his best to have one made for me to use at the BC Precision Rifle Championships.

True to his word he presented me with my mat at the Friday practice session. He even added 1/8" of padding throughout the entire mat as I requested.
I was immediately impressed by the quality of materials and construction. I have a Rifles Only mat and another unknown brand that I was using prior to the JSA and it was clear that this was a higher quality product.

I have come to prefer a thinner more minimalist mat that is not unneccesarily large or overpadded. I have found that mats that have too much padding can affect my consistency. This mat is perfectly proportioned at approximately 58"x30" with just enough padding to take the edge off of laying on hard or irregular surfaces. When rolled up it measures a compact 8"x14".
The quality of materials and workmanship is evident throughout. It has some very user friendly features such as; oversize zippered compartments with para-cord pulls, staking loops at each corner, velcro pads and cartridge loops as well as a water resistant backing. Perhaps the only thing I would add would be a built in buckle strap to secure the mat once rolled up.

My shooting partner and I had the pleasure of being squaded with Ed and his business partner Murray for the duration of the competition. Both are skilled marksman and great sportsman. Their advice and wisdom helped us first time competitors of this match immensely (eg. movers at 600m) A very nice gesture of sportsmanship.

Anyone looking for a high quality shooting mat would be well served by this one made by JSA. Its a great product made in Canada by people who support our shooting community. Kudos to JSA!

Thanks for the post. Several years ago I bought a mat from Midwest Insdustries when the dollar was on par. The mat wasn't expensive but leaves a lot to be desired. My criticisms are as follow:
1) The plastic-like material gets very hot in the sun
2) The plastic-like material develops a memory and curls up at each end when I roll it out
3) Both side of the mat have water resistant material, so when it rains or if there is snow, the water pools under you
How does the JSA do compared to my cheapo mat?

Looks nice for sure.

Might try one out in the future.

I think the additions of elastic straps to keep the mat rolled up is a fantastic idea. My work out mat (used for tent floor padding for my dog) has this and it's an easy, awesome addition for packing pads and keeping them tightly stored.
