mmmm, a Tula......and SKS.....mixed into one....that's like grrrreat. What year Claven?

Wish I could tell you! It's a bit of an oddball. Has a russian proofed and matching receiver cover with correct cyrillic prefixes, etc., but no Tula roll stamp and year on the cover like usual. Seems to have been either never applied or very well removed at refurb? The receiver, however, has the Tula star and serial number. Also the muzzle is counterbored about 1/2 inch, but not sure why? It's a chrome lined bore in perfect condition otherwise so the counterbore seems pointless. The bored out part is blued over, so it must have been part of the rearsenal process.

Only problem is some ninny ground off the bayo lug, but I have a new lug assembly en-route and a correct Russian bayo to put back on her and make her right...

OK, as part of further efforst to irritate Badgerdog (lol), here are some photos of the SKS. Note that I will be restoring the bayo & lug assembly shortly and that the (stupidly) illegal standard capacity mag (matching) is at the gunsmith's having a rod tack welded to the follower arm to limit it to 5 rounds.

Scrubbed receiver cover - military aid SKS perhaps? Dunno...

But the cover IS matching with original matching font stamps...?

Of course if someone was to offer me the right Mauser or Mosin... this one might not stick around very long... Semi-auto really isn't my gig, but I had to rescue this rifle from the chop saw... (thanks for the amnesty Stockwell!)

More info from Howie Bearse (webmaster of Simonov.net).

If you look at most top covers they all most always are two tone because of heat treatment i would guess. Look at your receiver, you have a small star after the serial number on left side so chances are it is a late 55 or 56 no date. (when you see tula star after serial number its a late 55 or 56 rifle they dropped the dates on top covers during that period.

So looks like my new Tula is a 1955 or 1956 made carbine :) Still way better than chicom junk IMHO :) Answer your questions bittermansbro?

EDIT: confirmed as a 55/56 nodate Tula ;) Check out this SKS site:
http://yooperj.com/SKS-1.htm
Scale down to 1955/56 and my rifle's markings are consistent with this site and Simonov.net's info. Looks legit variant and not a bubba except for the stupidly ground lug - grr... soon to be fixed though.

Damn straight! Now that kind of info lifts the spirits and takes one point back from Bubba. You're a good man for following up on that Claven, I had a bad sleep last night....nightmares about scrubbed Tula and dates :D

Once you get that lug on there, it will be back to the USSR. Are you going to put a flat blade bayo back on?

Absolutely ;) I plan to source a lug assembly and cleaning rod from Marstar and the blade from Districorps b/c they have Russian blades in stock. Should be a piece of cake and then she'll be "original" and only I (and ppl reading this thread) will ever know any batter - lol.

Of course, as I said, I'd swap it for a nice matching (non-electropencilled) laminated M38, laminated M91/30, Finn M27 or M28 - maybe even the right M24... ;) Possibly also a nice matching K98k refurb. I think any of those would be a fair trade as I really prefer bolt guns to semi-auto, but it being a Tula is "très cool" :)

That's the wrong side to take a pic on Klunky old chap. We wants to see pics of stamps and dates!

And yes, the Russian things do have a way of growing....like a mold that has medicinal properties. :p

Had it for years but just got my PAL so I finally got to transfer it to my name.

All matching FN49 Egyptian Contract in 8x57mm Mauser, bright shiney bore still looks like new, it has most of the finish 95% I'd guess. :D The upper handgaurd wood isnt as dark as the picture shows it though. :)

Nice looking rifle Dimitri. I'd guess it's a Century rebuild from the condition. Egyptian crest or eagle on the receiver? Do you have any more pics?

Stevo,

No more pictures sorry, I'll take some and post them in the photo gallery though sometime this week :). And no its not a Century rebuild thank god, Egyptian Crest, no import marks as far as I can tell. :D

Most of the serial numbers from 30,000 to 37,000 were imported originally in like new condition, the Egyptians never really used them as far as I've read. :)

Does it have stamped serial markings on the right side of the stock near the rear sight? Is the brass stock disk correct with the right screw? How high of a SN does it have?
