Jumped in on the K31 hype for cheap thanks to wholesale sports.

H Wally is LHAO at my expense, can't someone help me out and show how a good Mosin groups at 300m (iron sights) compared to an average K31.

I'll chime in after Cyclone.

I have Mosins that will easily keep up with any K31, as long as their being fed ammunition they like. Most will shoot surplus ammo into 4 moa at just about any distance but with tuned for the rifle handloads, less than half that, right down to moa with a couple isn't unusual, as long as the Mosin has an excellent bore and its bedding is tight.

Most K31 rifles I've owned, have had excellent bores and shoot GP11 into 2+inches on average. They will shoot select handloads into moa groups consistently.

When comparing milsurps, you need to compare two or more EQUAL GRADE specimens.

I recently came across a K31 that surprisingly had a worn finish and a worn bore. Maybe 75%. The owner had heard how accurate they were and his grandfather gave it to him, along with a 600 round case of GP11. It wouldn't shoot better than 3 moa, including my handloads.

Went through all the usual cleaning routines, tried different loads. Nothing changed. The bore was on its last legs and the rifle would be a good plinker.

I haven't tried re barreling one of these rifles because it's the only one I've ever come across that needed it. Not sure I want to take on the job.

1911 rifles often have worn bores and accuracy can vary with bore condition as well, just like any other rifles.

Just take a look at the later Swede M96 and 38 rifles that came into Canada a few years ago. Many of them have badly worn bores and they shoot accordingly as well.

I saw the $300 K31 at wholesale sports .. I passed because I wasn’t sure I needed it. I saw the $200 SVT40’s and passed too .... don’t be like me .... these deals are gone forever and were only a few years ago.

Just another regret in life.

Over on swissrifles.com, this very operation has often been talked about. What seems to be pretty straight-forward is anything but. It seems to cost around the $1000-mark in Switzerland, where they made the things in the first place, so doing it would really have to be a labour of love.

Gerald. I have K31. K11 carbine and rifle. What do you think: to have 1889 Schmidt and Rubin is a "must"???

That's completely up to you. If you want to have a complete collection of types Yes. If that isn't important, NO.

The only problem with the 1889 is that they aren't as strong and not recommended for GP11.

I know you're a responsible person and would keep the hand loads for the rifle separate and marked for the 1889 use only. So it wouldn't be a problem for you at all.

It's getting difficult to find uncut M1889 SRs these days.

FWIW, I have one of the 1889's rechambered to .30-30, for plinking fun....

Yup, a lot of people sneer at the way the chamber was sleeved and claim it isn't safe. Just not true.

I used one of those same rifles for over a decade to introduce young shooters to hunting and shooting. I believe I paid $30 for it, taxes in and shipped. I don't know how many have passed through my hands over the years but every one of them was more than accurate enough for hunting out to 150 yards.

$800-$1100 depending on condition and accessories.

Umm maybe that depends on where you live?

I haven't been to any gun shows since last fall. The last three shows I went to most K31s, without accessories were selling in the $600+- range depending, as you mention, on condition and accessories.

I picked up a very nice specimen, with a Walnut stock, 200 rounds of ammo, sling, cleaning kit and bayonet for $700. The fellow had half a dozen of them in his rack and I picked the best one which is close to perfect, other than the usual dings on the butt.

Then I was lucky enough to pick up one of the commemorative stocks from Martin at Corwin Arms. The rifle looks like it just came from the factory. The stock is made of light brown Walnut and gorgeous.

They don't seem to have the appeal they once did, now that GP11 is getting harder to find.

Well we're talkin about current prices not what you paid last fall or last year or whenever Corwin was still in business. I'm guessing you wouldn't be listing those $600 and $700 rifles for that price today though...now would you...
Rack grade K31 have been popping up for $600+ lately from retailers. Private sales will not echo retailer prices, they will be higher.

Well, I don't see them jumping off the EE at the prices you suggest. Even Weimajack lowered his prices on them.

you don't know the private sale price because it is not submitted, only the asking price. why would you pay more than retail. wishful thinking.

Oh really? So when buyers bought the recent $680 K31s that came in limited supply do you actually think they turned around sold them for what they paid for them, if they sold them at all?
Can you please post links to all the retailers that currently have K31s in stock?
