I just recently picked up a very nice '47 JC from the EE and I was wondering how accurate they are at 100 yards (haven't shot her yet), in comparison to a No4 or No1? I know that the JC is a carbine and meant for more close combat, but at 100 yards how do they fare?

I had mine out today to sight it in it was a bit of a go-around but I think I got the windage on finally. I don't plan on shooting it too much mainly I wanted to get it ready for the Ishapore Open invitational match. - I'm not set up for reloading .303, and the factory ammo is just ridiculous.
 
I had three JC's through my hands in last year and all of them where beautiful shooters at 100 yards. I was getting groups under 2" with factory ammo and iron sights. Although POI seem to drift quite a bit with barrel temperature, so if its going to be your hunting rig I suggest to sight it in on a cold barrel.
 
I keep both my no.5 's on the gong at 200m, but can't seem to do tight groups at that range. It's probably my shoulder dislocating a little with each shot. Much respect to the fellows that fired these at war, must have been preferable to being shot, but guaranteed an injury regardless.;)
 
Real men shoot cast lead bullets. Still working on loads for my #4 rifle but I am down to a couple of inches at 100 yds which is likely where I'll stay given shooters ability with tired eyes. Love to put a scope on the rifle and see what it really can do.

Next rifle purchase will be a JC. Shooting cast would take the sting out of the rifle.

I've been shooting the same No5 JC since buying it in like new condition for $18 back in 1961/62. It is fitted with a Bishop Monte carlo butt and has had a 23/4 x Redfield Widefield scope fitted since 1980.It averages 3" 100 yd groups off the bench with handloads and has gotten me a lot of deer,a moose,and a bear over the yrs.An absolutely ideal hunting rifle in bush conditions where shot opportunities come fast and at ranges up to 100yds.BTW,I've never experienced the mythical No5 "wandering zero" issue with this rifle or a couple of other No5s in issue condition.I've never found the recoil excessive either, and this is a non-issue in a hunting situation anyway.
 
Thanks guys! I read a bit about the recoil and I am really looking forward to taking her out. Nothing I own has surpassed the M14 yet, so I figure my shoulder can take it. Glad to hear about the accuracy too. Maybe I will register for the EOHC Milsurp shoot....

One of the reasons I bought the rifle (other than my obsession with LEs) is because I plan on taking my Ural motorcycle to Labrador City next summer, down the Trans Labrador Trail, and I want to bring the JC with me because it is nice and portable.
 
Does anyone know if the barrel on the #5 MK 1 is tapered, mainly I'm thinking of the part rear of the flash hider and forward of the forend tip. . .:confused:

Berger, have a nice trip but it probably would not hurt to check out provincial hunting regulations, unless you already looked into it, in which case ignore this sentence.
