My Enfield doesn't have any markings on the left side of the receiver where you would normally find the date and the factory who made the rifle. Is that odd? In fact, the only markings I can find on the rifle are SM on the left side of the ladder sight, the serials on the bolt and the magazine (magazine is force-matched). There are some cartouches on the stock.

The bottom of the grip is marked R.F. and just below it, there is an 8 inside a V, and to the left of that there's a 5 inside a V. Right at the end of the bottom of the grip where the actual butt starts, there's an L.

On the right side of the buttstock there's a circle with the top faded out. There looks to be three numbers, but the tops are so faded I can't make them out, and immediately below them there's an upward pointing arrow, and below that it says 6-54.

The top of the buttstock has an S right at the end of the stock, and another S a couple inches forward of it.

Anyone know what these markings mean? And why doesn't the receiver have the date/location of manufacture?

Pictures are invaluable when trying to identify a rifle. Many times there are other markings that the person who posts the thread either do no realize that they are important or dismisses them as inconsequental. While Military rifles should have the markings intact, many of these rifles ended up in the hands of importers, who scrubbed or altered the original markings, not to mention "Bubba" who alters and polishes rifles and reblues them.

Many Indian rebuilt JCs were sold as surplus and when they were rebuilt mostl marks were removed.

A few years back I had a No. 5 that had been to India (screw crossways throught the fore end), then to Germany where it had all the original markings scrubbed. German proof markings were applied then it was apparently sold commerically. I have absolutely no idea how it ended up in Canada.
