Jungle carbine questions

that big letter is an S, for Savage, not a 5

That's what I first thought also, but that really is the shape of a 5. Look close at it, absolutely flat top, with a narrow space to the curvature of a 5, then the normal, large circle of a 5.
Also, the band at the wrist is marked "England." Would that marking be there if it was made by Savage?
Not that it matters, or I particularily care, but just wondering.

That "5" is a savage S. it was stamped England sometime prior too it being sold too private ownership.

If it was a no5 is would be cleared marker by rof or BSA.

That being said numerous bubba no5 have been made from no4s. I full photo of your rifle would be confirmation.

Your savage is made in 1942, no5 didn't start production until 1944

The No7 MkI bayonet does not fit on a No5. You had me thinking I was taking crazy pills so I dug them out and tried. Still, they dont go together.

so, after much searching i cant find any good info, but they do lack the pommel clip. why on earth they would make a ring on the cross guard to shoot through if it didnt fit the muzzle of anything is beyond me

My apologies to the OP, as I take us off on a tangent.
There is a Bubba'd savage around my dad's but with 'Savage' marked in it's entirety.
When did they begin marking their product with only an 'S'?
