Ok so I went and got the number of my local PAL instructor, give him a call and see If I can do a junior pal course (16, turning 17 in may) and he said there was an online course I need to do and hung up on me promptly after. So if he is right, where is this online course? and if he's wrong, where do you guys say I should go and get my junior pal course in southern alberta?

Oh, I just forgot, what can you all do with a junior PAL?

He must have thought you were looking for a hunters ed course. There is no junior course, there is just the Canadian Firearms Safety Course, and the Canadian Firearms Restricted Course.

If you take those courses, and pass the test, at least the first one, you can apply for a minors permit.

That allows you to borrow and use non restricted firearms. So you can go shooting without the immediate supervision of a PAL holder.

Be warned that if you go hunting alone there is something about hunting without adult supervision in the hunting regs.

Ok so I need to do the pal/rpal course (I want an rpal when I'm 18 so might as well do that now), then how do I go about getting the minors permit (thats what I was thinking about, kinda screwed up the name I guess)? And this would mean that If my father gave me permission I could go and take our non-restricteds to the range whenever I want (with his permission of course)?

i had my minors permit i just wrote the standard PAL test once i passed i had to go for an interview with the chief firearms officer down town he signed off and took my picture and we sent the paper work off. when i turned 18 i filled out the pal renewal with proof of passing the PAL test sent in my money and got a full pledged PAL. minors allows you to buy ammo i know that cant remember all the other stuff. i don't think there is a restricted Minors license but i could be wrong.

Ya I know there isn't a restricted, but I thought you couldn't buy ammo? I guess I was wrong. I just want to go to the range without my dad sometime, our work schedules don't always mix and sometimes its 2 weeks before we can go, and it hurts me on the inside lol.

I got my minors same as a regular as far as tests and such but all its really good for is hunting. You can't take a gun and go on your own, but it allows you to take two guns i.e. one for you and one for your dad. you must be under his supervision though. Also stores wouldnt sell me ammo or even let me hold a gun which i thought was bull because when i got it i was under the impression i would be able to buy ammo. Not sure if this is law or just policy but these were my experiences.

Ok, so what I take from all that is, is that unless there is a certain stipulation under my license, I can go anywhere with a non-restricted (I think I MIGHT be ok if I just tell them it is just to go to the range and target fire, but I guess that would depend on the interview).

My little guy (14) did his pal & hunter course this past summer...so now he has his minor pal and apprentice hunter license here in Ontario....and can go out and shoot with me...or just do the small bore at the range...

This past fall we both did the restricted course...I now have my R-PAL and he can apply for his when he turns 18...unless the rules and regs change by then <sigh>

The range doesn't want anyone under the age of 15 shooting handguns indoors, but as they say, there is nothing stopping us from going down to the open range and letting him shoot handguns with me being the direct safety officer.
