Jus' Wondering... Deploying to A'stan... What optic would you choose for C7A1 / C8

One of my teammates runs a compact ACOG -- the only issue for greenside ops is no BDC -- so its hard to jusdge distance or engage beyond 300m -- is that important? You have to be the judge -- I know a lot of people that swear by them.
- They are the issued optic for US Department of State

On the TA31 series ACOG issue -- IMHO (as Reaper said) the Dr is unnenessary - but it does not add any precievable weight so...
The TA01 however needs all the CQB help it can

DLR are not gun guys 99% of the time -- and the mistake is done when non Infantry soldiers dream up specs or make decisions for the end user.

Leupold CQ/T -- its a gamers delight - a lot of US three gun shooters run them -- but it has some major deficiences that make it a poor choice for a combat optic

Someone really should compile abbreviations for people like me. I'm sure KevinB's trying to help me out, but I feel so...stupid when reading his post...

PhilB:

I realize that my TA31 input may be limited for your deployment, but I have shot a carbine match with my wife's TA31 donut recently. Came in 4th place which is not bad for a wannabe (old and disabled) like me. Inside the 100 meter mark, the donut just rocked the competition. I could do no wrong. My wife shot really well with it and she claimed the donut TA31 for her 14.5" carbine. I competed in the Sep '06 OSA Service Rifle matches with that 14.5" Armalite and TA31 Donut. I rocked so well in all my stages. I've been competing in Service Rifle for years with Leupold Tacticals, MR/T's and LR/T's with many 50's and countless V bulls. Now I've switched over to the TA31 RCO M4 with the chevron reticle. I just love the darn thing. Greentips hooked me on the ACOG's especially when I saw him show up with his matching DCU cammies at Connaught and then he rocked all the 1RCR shooters with his shooting ability. Lesson Learned: Never underestimate Greentips' goofy outfits.... He kicked my Leupold ass...

Now I just shot a bunch of fig 11 targets at a recent practice with a TA01 NSN. The graduated reticle messed me up for CQB. I was second guessing that (too busy for my eye) complicated reticle, especially with 2 eyes open, heads up shooting, doorkicker pretending wannabe practice, and houseclearing fantasizing shooting.

Shooting CQB matches heads up with both eyes open ? I had great success with both reticles. With the donut, I just centered that baby and let 'er go. Just like the chevron reticle... 10, 15, 20, 25, 35, 50 and 100 meter distances, I shot like a house on fire. Too fzcken bad I don't shoot like this in the Connaught rundowns. Too many fricken' groundhog holes at Connaught Ranges. What I truly appreciate with either (my wife and I have both donut and chevron as you might have gathered) reticles, is that my eye gravitates quickly to the glowing reticle automatically lined (instinctively almost... spooky shzt) up with center mass of fig 11 targets. I set up a bunch of them during this practice and I just loved how quickly I could engage targets at a 270 degrees and inside 50 meters. Holy shzt , I was fast. That's why I just love the Bindon Aiming Concept with this kind of glass.

If I was not too old to deploy to Asskrakistan, I would take my TA31 RCO M4. I would stake my disabled 48 year old life on this optic.

I hope this provides some clarity even if it's in the context of carbine and service rifle matches. Also my wife's shooting context, too.

Also, I want to ensure you deploying CGNutters get back in one piece with our help, albeit from the sidelines....

Cheers,
Barney

So Kev, for the TA31 it can operate like an aimpoint, both eyes open, no issues? Also which reticle would you recommend?

the ACOG TA31F w/ BAC is a VERY nice optic. There are no problems with CQB type shooting with the BAC....well besides taking about 5 minutes to get used to it. You can do both eyes open for CQB and any other range with no problems. Very simple and reliable for combat use....it has been proven with the US military.

If there are any CF guys in Edmonton and want to try out the TA31F BAC just give me a shout!

Some people - as we found out - cannot use BAC.

There are disadvantages to the BAC setups -- specifically for certain ranges the zero using it as a CCO and as a magnified optic can be different -- once again that seems to be individual to peoples eyes.

Additionaly I find it very hard to shooting from a moving vehicle with an ACOG.

But dont get me wrong I think the ACOG are good -- several buddies after their tour in Afghan on the TF1-06 roto ran out and bought TA31RCO's

Whats BAC stand for?

I'm using the issued Elcan over there. I found that mine is retaining zero much better than the first gen ones, but the rear wingnut on the mount gets loose time to time but I keep my eye on it. I have short eye relief which lets me attach my iron back up right infront of my Elcan. I cant use it like that, but if I need to rip off my scope its there. I had a harris bipod attached before I was issued an M203. This is a little off topic but the harris bipod I bought (had it on my norc M14 for awhile) just couldn't take the punishment, it slowly stopped working smoothly and then flat out started to fall apart. I removed it and threw it in the garbage. (no time or space for extra junk out there).

The other M203 grenadier was issued an EOtech and he loves it. I've seen him hit targets at 100+ easily, and he tells me its compatable with night vision, which should be factored into your optics purchase. We get away with lots of mods since we're not in KAF alot. A weapon tech saw my bipod and tried to give me heck, since he thought I drilled holes or glued it on. He was totally unfamiliar with harris products which shocked me. Through the chain of command, I was given flak for installing front and rear tac star pistol grips, side saddle and mag extensions on my sections 870's. Again, this was weapon techs raising hell over mods they didnt understand. But those mods are still on, the platoon leadership loves it. (again off topic, just a heads up)

Also be aware that the gear you're potentially dropping alot of coin on is going to get dirty and abused in ways you cant predict. Even my folding knife will probably never be clean again!

Flanker: Bindon Aiming Concept, basically like two eyes open. We shoot that way in paintball tournaments. Once you get used to it, it's super effective. Lots of dry fire practice in my basement with a reduced fig 11 on the wall did it for me. Have a read here: www.trijicon.com (link is GTG Trijicon is a manufacturer not a dealer).

I'm thankful that you are sharing your KAF experiences with us on this forum. To quote that s2pid ##### Windy Cookies, "It if saves one life..." I want all of you fellas on Roto to get back in one piece.
