so i decided to try my hand at making a stock, because if i was successful it would free funds up for other parts of my build.

i drove to an exotic wood store and found the best sheet of laminate plywould i could find. i picked up a 4'x10' sheet pf furniture grade russian birch for about $70. i had to buy a 1" half round router bit, which cost me $58 to order. other then a few hours a night for the past week and a half, that is all i have invested in it. plus i have enough laminate left over to make at least 3 more (which if there is one thing i have learned doing this, is i wont ever make one again)

so its got a floated barrel, a nice oversized palm swell, adjustable cheek piece, inletted for the pt&g bottom metal. i'm not done the forearm, its still kind of square, still trying to source a full length anchutz rail then i might give the edges a slight round. havnt figured the buttpad yet, but i have a few ideas.

anyways it hasnt turned out too bad for my first project like this. everyone that has seen it has nothing but good to say, so i think i'm on the right track.

once its done it'll be bedded, and aluminum pillar bedded.

if anyone has any furhter ideas dont hesitate to throw it out.

That's really, really cool!

You may have inspired me... though in my case (lacking self confidence), I'd probably start with just a pair of planed 2x6s, clamped and glued. An extremely cheap way to knock together a prototype (albeit splintery).

That's a great little project - please post more picks as you go!

I've got about 5 hours of hand sanding left, I'm on hold untill I get the aics .223 mags in so I can set the bottom metal and get it to feed properly

I'm gonna do the black dye like on other laminates

I have that picture on my computer at home, I will post them tomorrow when I get home, the most time consuming part was going from 1" to the 1 3/16" for the action, and the taper at the end of the barrel

Time consuming to shape the sides? Or internally? Not too sure what you mean here. I'll be making a stock in the spring so thanks for posting progress pics!

Shaping the inside, I used a dremal drum sander on my dewalt drill. If you look at your barrel it tapers out at the action. I routered the 1" channel for the barrel then had to do the action by hand.

When I post pictures of the action you will see what I mean.

The actual shaping of the stock didn't take long. It was all done with a grinder with a sanding disk.

Looks really good!
Just a suggestion for anyone interested in trying this method of making a laminated stock - if gluing up a stock blank from this plywood, the inner laminations can be cut to reduce the amount inletting that needs to be done.

That would honestly be pretty tricky, it really wasn't anything to get the insetting done. I'll post more pictures when I get home, I just didn't want to post 30 pictures all at once.

I drilled holes where I had to go through for the trigger and the clip, deeper then I had to, then on the bandsaw I cut the bottom out the height of the stock, and back to the grip, and when I removed that piece I had holes right through, 20 min with the chisel and voila

Thanks for the clarification. I'm planning on making a template-based jig for my plunge router to do the inletting. I've used routers before (but never made a stock) so I'm curious about the challenges.

When you find an anchutz rail, can you please post your source? :) Thanks!

Wow...Great job Man!! Looks like that's NOT the first thing to be made on your bench...heh heh ....Keep us posted on the finish up for sure. We'll be watching!

ok here are more pictures that people have requested.

here you can see while the it was still one solid block, i drilled on the drill press deeper then i had to go, then used the chisel to get the material out. then when i was done, i cut on the bandsaw along the bottom of the foregrip, to the grip. leaving the perfect opening right through.

here is the 1" routered in the full length

here is when i was getting the action to fit, on the left side just past the receiver you can notice a gouge in the side. when i was routering the barrel in, i sneezed, and i heard the router grab and i was like "@#%@#$@@#$@???" because i knew by the sound what had happened. but it wasnt that bad, i filled it in with wood filler. the scrap piece also makes a gread wokring rest.

this is the best picture i can get of the taper from 1" to 1 3/16" for the receiver.
