i wonder if it would be worthwhile for one of the "custom" riflemakers( ie m14 doctor or equivilent) to offer a "HEAVY" VERSION OF THE M14 /M305S IN A PACKAGE- ie a usgi or custom cast gas cylinder with SADLAK piston installed - ie you send the rifle to the smith and he swaps out the chinese gas cylinder and piston for one of these custom units, does a test fire and sends it back- there's an awful lot of guys that prefer the 180 grain pills and this would address that- or is there more to it than that and i'm missing something?

It's the impact on the operating rod that is the primary concern. Without an adjustable gas system of some sort, you won't be able to reliably/safely shoot all the different loads of .308win out there.

i'm NOT CONCERNED with shooting "all the different loads out there- only the 180 grain pills" which is WHY the sadlak piston in the FIRST PLACE-that's WHY i called the thread m14 /305 HEAVY- it has to do with launching HEAVY bullets out of the m14/305- from what i understand it's the CHINESE cylinder being a different diameter than the usgi that's the fly in the ointment- that's ALSO why it should be offered as a AFTERMARKET kit or service- not everyone would want it- same as n/m sights or a heavier contour barrel

Yes , dr mentioned this to me a while ago too , something about the chinese cylinders are not exactly to spec so the mating surfaces of the gas piston and interior wall have "issues" .

However as the above poster stated the Sadlak piston was designed with a groove to specifically allow the user to fire over 168 grain bullets without damage to the system ... should take sometime to reasearch before throwing out negligible information .

that's why i suggested having it available as a 'KIT" OR SERVICE-so you get a MATED cylinder and piston THAT YOU KNOW WORKS - if rooster33 was still around he PROBABLY could have cast a custom cylinder assembly- or for that matter, the whole works- that man was an absolute genius when it came to making bits and pieces for the 14

Can someone confirm that turning off the gas system render it safe to shoot heavier bullet ?
Turning off the gas system turns the rifle into a bolt action and there is no op-rod damage. As all the gasses vent out the end of the barrel. Although using nork style op-rods and not using a steady diet of 180's shouldn't be a problem.

A 180 will be fine now. Mind you, a 180 won't do anything a 165, 168 or 175 won't do.
Sooner or later 762mm Firearms is going to get jumped on by the U.S. government.

While we have a few gas system gurus here, can anyone tell me if turning the gas valve off has an effect on POI?

hey i ain't no newbie- i know and HAVE SEEN what a steady diet of 175smks will do to an oprod-it's well documented on the us army marksmanship site- in other words they HAVE PICTURES- so a 180 won't be fine now- the reason is that i have a particular love affair with the 180 and it would far cheaper to modify the rifle to shoot 180s than to load 165s like i do now for the long term- i also have 4 m14s that i would have to change
