Carbon fiber wrap a m14 platform barrel? your could get at least a 1/8" of material on there without effecting the brake down. Nothing ventured nothing gained right? worst case it would go up in flames
 
i think you have been modding to many honda civics :p. It looks cool on call of duty post the pics when or if you do it i wanna see.
 
They make them for 50 cals, is what sparked the idea. My guess is it would hurt the harmonics more than anything if not done perfectly though. Supposedly they are more ridged and lighter weight of course
 
some guy did his to look like a snake it was really neat looking i thought could you airbrush it in dura coat to somehow look like a carbon fiber mesh?
 
Neat idea but what's to gain? I would want to make sure the wrap is perfect, if it were to losen of our shift you could influence the harmonics and barrel whip, making it inconsistent. I know Remington did a 700 with a carbon fiber barrel, it looked very slick but.. Well they don't make it any more.

I always wanted to buy a USGI stock and use carbon fiber to make it more ridged instead of fiberglass inside the gas system channel.

I was thinking for making a stiffer barrel but yea i agree the more i think about it, it would have to be a extremely tight wrap and consistent for it to work, little out of my capability
 
There are atleast a couple barrel manufacturers that make carbon wrapped barrels for bolt action guns. Apparently they work pretty well, re: barrel stiffness to weight ratios. I too played with this idea. It should stiffen up the barrel, will it make the stock barrel more consistent? I don't know. I think if done correctly it would work well on a standard profile match barrel. Wrap it in CF all the way to the same diamater as a Kreiger heavy barrel. Use the clamp on over sized op rod guide, should be good to go.
I think the type of epoxy needs to be taken into consideration as well. Some CF and epoxy coatings will insulate the barrel preventing it from cooling well. However I don't really see how this would be much different than a heavy barrel, takes longer to heat up, but stays hotter longer. I have read about an epoxy/CF combo that actually dissipates heat faster than steel. Well it would be nice to have a high speed machine that will lay a single strand of CF onto the barrel for you. I think if one took the time to set up properly you could spin the carbon onto the barrel very tightly and quite uniformely, enough to have a positive outcome.

These are my opinions, that come from some research I did and some time I spent crusing through carbon fiber / fiberglass forums. None of which is really very scientific at all.
 
I'd just order a krieger heavy barrel, for the money, it's your best option
Carbon fiber is not cheap and getting more expensive all the time. Currently, at retail, carbon fiber laminating cloth is in excess of 60.00 per yard. You would probably need 5 to 10 running yards, a vacuum set up and a thermoclave to correctly cure the epoxies you will need to use.
I wouldn't bother trying it in the garage hehehe
