Just back from Africa with my son....

We only took one rifle between us...Tikka 308 with 165 grain Federal factory loads that worked well. All game was taken with this rifle except for my Eland which I borrowed the PH's 300 Win Mag for with 180 grain bullets...

Too bad you don't make sporters anymore. I always lusted after them after I visited the shop with my (then) girlfriend in the late 90's and got to fondle a wee light 308 and an equally ###y 280 (before 280s were cool again).

But I digress. Umdende always looked good in the ads. Glad to see it was such a good trip. But then again, takign your kid to Africa hunting...how bad could it be?

Speaking of ducks I was surprised to learn our outfitter Umdende offers a lot of waterfowl shooting around Vryheid as well....

I may have missed it in the comments, but doing some mounts? I have an Impala hanging in my room up at camp oddly enough, little taste of home, they make a beautiful mount of manageable size. The fellow I have hanging is 29", I think your son out did him. Wish I'd done what he has at 14 years old, and two zebra rugs, well done they are a beautiful thing to display.

For taxidermy we are going to have all of the hides made into rugs and all of the horns mounted on plaques. No shoulder mounts from this trip are planned although if we were going to do one it would have been the Impala as it was as you noted exceptional.

We are planning to return next July again...can't believe I waited 16 years between trips to Africa....

This is what I wish I had done. It costs me a small fortune to have my capes and unmounted trophies shipped here and cleared thru customs. The storage fees alone would pay a sizeable down payment on another hunt. I would love to support Canadian Taxidermists but the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has made that an unlikely option for my next trip.

I'm not sure if you are the greatest dad in the world, or the worst. The great part is self explanatory, but for him to have had the opportunity to do that at age 14?, now after that experience he stands better than even odds of becoming a hopelessy obsessive, one track minded, responsibility shirking, hunting fool. On the bright side, I think Ardent is looking at forming a support group of like minded individuals that he could join to help him shoulder these unbearable burdens.....Society of Misguided Adventurers? Lol

Seriously, that is awesome, good on you both.

Booked again for next July for my son and I. We are going to bowhunt this time around with Nyala for myself and Eland for my son being the primary goals to harvest.
