I found some money for Optics!!
So I was loading these today, cause I was a little bored and it needed to get done....
Anyway, that was just some gratuitous .338 reloading #### to throw in this AR thread.... So anyway, a knock on the door and an AR shows up! And I cheered. I hadn't had an AR delivery in days! And the Daniel Defence was getting lonely in the gun safe without another AR there. It was like getting a dog and it only had cats for friends.... Anyway, the Colt got here, I threw some cheap optics I could afford on them as placeholders.... If you read back you know about my troubles with the unfortunate purchase of 2 AR's and lack of Optics money.... Anyway this is what I got.
And there you have it. A Daniel Defence V7 and a Colt 6920 Magpul, side by side to compare.
The Colt got a Nikon M223 1-4, which I must say is very nice. The glass is much clearer and easier to use, at least for me than the Bushnell AR series or Burris series or anything else in the 400 dollar range. I mounted it on a A.R.M.S. #35 QD mount. If you guys are looking... this mount is fantastic. Fully adjustable, you can put the rings anywhere on it, steel construction, QD levers, different height inserts for the rings and just bloody solid! The only thing I'm not happy about is the BUIS don't fit on the short rail. As I'm not going to war.... I'll get over it.
The Daniel got an EoTech. There's lots of rail on this thing so BUIS will go soon.
Comparisons and notes BEFORE firing. I haven't shot either yet.
This struck me first:
This is the Daniel Defence:
This is the Colt:
They both have the Keyhole mark on both the upper and lower. Does this not mean same factory built both?
Other than that, I noted that the Daniel probably has a bit better finish, with the outer paint job or whatever it is going on a little thicker and blacker. It seems a touch better. Though truthfully I wouldn't knock the Colt. The Daniels print and "Rollmarks" are finished better with consistent depth on the lettering and nicely done laser etching. The Colts rollmark depth is inconsistent and fluctuates. The Daniel has their standard wording on the side, while the Colt simply says "M4 Carbine" with the Colt horse symbol and the Colt Python badging. No Gov/Law Enforcement only wording.
Mechanically, this is what I note. The Colt trigger is better of these 2 with the Daniel having a gritty pull. The Colt's charging handle is also smoother. It allows use with the proper 2 finger charge or with this the one finger left side pull. If you use just one finger on the DD it has a tendency to bind instead of sliding easily. Both these issues may work themselves out after firing and use.
Furniture. Both have the Magpul MOE buttstocks. I like them but they are sloppy. They'll get replaced. The Colt has the Magpul grip which I really like. The standard grip on the Daniel is for some people, I don't like it. It's too thin. The front handguard on the Colt is the Magpul MOE and the Daniel has a round tube free floated grip, and has a bit of an advantage in my mind as it has almost unlimited mounting options. It's very well built and solid. The Magpul guard has 9 mount slots for their system, which is good too. The Colt also comes with a Magpul vertical MOE foregrip, and I like it a lot. It's my favorite foregrip and I use it on my KSG and my XCR. The DD needs something on that big tube... but I don't know what. Maybe take off the front 3 accessory rails and run it clean actually. Not sure yet.
I'll update once we get a chance to run the 2 and compare. Might swap the sights back and forth to see what I like, but I'm leaning toward the glass myself.
I'm also leaning toward the Colt a bit more. The overall setup seems to be more what I want, but we'll see.
A quick shout out to Wolverine Supply AND IRunGuns for these 2 magnificent rifles and absolutely spaztastic deals. Wolverine provided the A.R.M.S. mounts and the EoTech. Prophet River was also very prompt and awesome with the M223 scope and lowering the price to compete with other dealers. I live in Sask and I prefer to deal on the Prairies. The people are just better!
Party on guys.
