It was an impulse buy. Really like the caliber but I don't know much about the rifle. It felt pretty good on my shoulder and action felt smooth. Any comments

I'll make a comment....you bet!!

First, I'll put it on record that I am a fan of the Remington 700.
I own quite a number of them, and am very pleased with them.

But....I now own 5 Weatherby Vanguards, two S2's and 3 S1's.
They are very fine rifles for the dollar spent.
All of these will hover around moa with loads they like. Some a bit less.

Chamberings are: 270 Win; 30-06; 300WSM; 300 Win Mag; 338 Win Mag.

They seem very solid, and the wood stocked ones are very easy on the eyes.

While I'm not prepared to switch loyalties yet, I am impressed with these Howa - built rifles.
Regards, Eagleye.

Lucky guy, is that an old series model? I didn't think the new ones came 270 wsm in stainless, just blued. Just for that reason I was looking for one of the older ones, to go with my stainless 300wsm vanguard that I thought they were no longer making, just blued in that caliber. Am I wrong on this? Is there a store that has more of these?

If you want google to tell you more about these rifles try searching howa 1500 instead, probably a bit more detailed info on the actions under that name. It's my understanding they are loosely based on the old sako design, basic 2 lug modified mauser....I believe, if somebody needs to correct me on this please do. You'll find it's actually tough to find anything negative about these rifles, except maybe the trigger on the older models (easily honed, or just swap it out) high bolt lift and some creampuffs whining about it weighing 7.5 lbs.

Nosler seems to think they're a pretty cool design, but they won't admit it........oops

What's unpleasant about it is I won't get out to shoot it probably till spring. The more I read on this rifle the better it sounds making it harder to not be able to shoot it. But it probably needs a few good cleanings, lol.

Hookedonblacktail the store I got it at just got it in the day before on trade. As soon as I grabbed it, it was hard to put back down. I missed a .338 win in the Vanguard SS a few years ago and I wasn't going to pass up another one.

I have a series 2 Vanguard in 300 Weatherby. Verry impressed. Extremely smooth action and even better 2 stage adjustable trigger. Mine came in at 2.5 lbs on my Lyman trigger scale. Smooth trigger pull, no "bumps" and breaks clean. No creep. I have shot 210 Berger hunting VLD's out to 450 meters off the bipod and she shoots MOA or better if I do my part. I have a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50 mildot on it and she is a beauty.
I'll post a pic soon.

That sounds awesome Jason. I got a box of 130gr. ammo thrown in the deal probably do the 140 gr. after this box is gone. And can't wait to see how it shoots.

Yup that's how I bought mine, was on the clearance rack at wss for 540$ and couldn't put it back down, wasn't even loooking for a new rifle. I liked it so much I found another stainless synthetic in 270 at another store for 550$ now I have perfect matched brother and sister set. So many people pass up these 'budget' rifles and buy an axis instead, can't understand it. I think the only reason they're so cheap is because the actions are built in Japan and we all know what they are capable of in the manufacturing field...precision and efficiency....... and perhaps cheaper labor costs. I have much more confidence in the quality control of these rifles than others, look at the Japanese culture, fiercly honorable and full of pride and work ethic.

Here's the pic. It"s not stainless but she's still a shooter.

I have an s1 in 7mm rem mag.I LOVE THIS GUN.I bought it new for like 360.00 when i lived in Texas.sub moa groups with handloads(never tried factory in it)It is my main deer rifle. Recoil is very mild.I put quite a few rounds through it every year.I am sure you will be happy with your purchase.Good luck

Well I guess I did get lucky. You people that have one then bought a second or third really speaks loudly for the rifle. Maybe there Will be more in my future. If I really like the 270 wsm now that I own a rifle in it. Maybe I will have to buy the 270 WSM in the wooden Vanguard. Have to research those. Lol.

Thanks. She's definitely a shooter. This was my second Vanguard, my other was a series 1 in 270. Both shot very good but the series 2 is leaps and bounds better (quality and trigger) than the series 1. The Vortex Viper scope with the bubble level is a necessity when hunting in the mountains. Long range shots are a snap with that scope. You have to remove the stock to adjust the trigger (only complaint). Luckilly I liked the feel of it from the factory so I left it as is. I might start shopping for a 308 series 2 once my accountant gives me the final numbers on my taxes....

Buck hunter I bought a Winchester extreme SS last year in 308. I was looking for the same in the 270WSM. But I liked the feel of the Weatherby. I did sneak out today to shoot some with The 270WSM. Just out for fun with it, wasn't going for any accuracy goals today. I have a Bushnell elite 3600 DOA 600 that I bore sighted before I went out. Which was way out. What the hell...

Shooting and setting up a new rifle is more than half the fun and/or frustration. Once set up, I get my kicks reloading a "match accurate" hunting round. Sometimes I succeed and sometimes I fail. It's all fun either way. The more you shoot your Weatherby, the more you'll like it.

I have a vanguard S1 Sporter in 308. Love it to death. Best $450 I've ever spent. I have a S2 in 7mm rem mag on my list and also possibly one in 223 (might also do a savage m25 instead on that one though)

Fantastic rifles. I've completely thrown my hat into the Weatherby ring.
