So I raced to Wanstalls just before close the other day walked in and immediately greeted by staff.

"Do to have any 590a1's in stock?".

"Yep, check out the 590a1 Black Water".

*quick inspection and request to see the 590a1 special purpose*

"I'll take a 590a1 Special purpose, and a Mesa Tactical 8 shell side saddle, thanks".

In and out in under ten minutes, with the typical great service of Wanstalls stock and staff.

Purchase aside, this wasn't a ten minute decision. I've had a Mossberg 500 mariner in my inventory for several years but never have gave it a lot of attention. I've taken it to the range a few times and maybe into the bush once. It's a nice shotgun, but I've spent so much time around the 870 that its ergonomics just became the norm.

That said, a few months ago I began looking into a 870 police because, quite frankly, I hate the express model - it may be as fine as the old 870 line but I just can't get past it. I will always look at them as a cheap alternative to lower priced competitors that sacrifice a bit of quality and Remington soul.

Through my research I came back to the 590a1 all steel, the military test, and although it has an aluminum receiver, I like the bolt carrier locking into the barrel.

I chose the special purpose over the Blackwater for a couple of reasons. First and foremost was the speed feed stock. How that idea got past research is beyond me. Online reading confirmed that the recoil and even rough carry tends to knock those rounds out. A Mesa tactical side saddle doesn't.

I've been running a dominion arms 12.5 and it's fun on the range and nice in the truck, however, 4+1 is quite hard to keep running on drills. I also found ejection to be hit and miss occasionally.

The 590a1 has the 20" barrel and holds 8+1 and is complimented by the 8 shell holder.

The Finish quality is a bit rough compared to the Benellis of course but for a tactical/combat shotgun it's quite nice.

The sights are nice. The fiber optic in red is nice and much easier to site the a typical brass bead.

The black water did have the advantage of the brand name XS ghost sight. The special purpose come with an LPA ghost sight. Both are nice. The LPA has screw driver adjustments and a thumbscrew quick release. Which is a nice addition on the pic rail and there is room for a red dot.

I was skeptical of the bayonet and found it to be tacky. However seeing that it's an actual Ontario knife M9 standard bayonet it's grown on me. I initially thought the bayo was custom to fit the mag tube of the 590a1. Turns out Mossberg just milled the end cap to fit the mounting ring.

As a whole I think it's actually a pretty cool addition, giving a bit of a tip of that hat to old school trench shot guns and to current issue use in the military.

Over all the shotgun market is as competitive as ever and it really just seems to come down to your price point. For example the difference between my dominion arms and 590a1 are noticeable. Though both do get the job done.

I'll have to get it out on range to see if the ported barrel helps at all, though I'm not expecting much.

Sorry, just a couple pictures.

Future mods are still up in the air. I like the magpul furniture but I'm not positive yet. I have a vickers sling kicking around and may likely use it the magpul butt stock will help with mounting but I'm not sure how to sling the front. Their is a traditional fore sling button that screws into the Bayo lug, but I'll need some metal for the vickers sling.

And again I'll be reading up on lighting options.

You can't go wrong with a 590A1. Good choice getting a non speed-feed stock. Rounds never stayed put in any I've owned.
20" heavy barrel, bayo, 8+1 and 8 more on the side….it's going to be a heavy SG especially if you're planning on adding an optic or other accessories. Personally, I don't care for the Magpul furniture but that obviously doesn't matter.
Enjoy the new Mossberg….

Congrats! Enjoy its a great gun!
I love mine, although lately I've been favoring my more light weight tactical shotguns. But sometimes you just want the extra weight so in steps the 590. I can't own just one, or two, or three though...

Yea it's definitely got some weight to it. I've been running some dummy rounds through it and you definitely fatigue faster trying to lever that long, heavy barrel and fully loaded mag tube.

The idea behind shell Carrier was to try and bring some of the weight or the centre of gravity rearward.

I don't think the magpul furniture is the end all, be all. However. I do like changing the grip angle without having to resort to a collapsible conversion (such as Mesa).

Just for kicks, I may look at an oversized safety, but we will see how the stock metal one holds up against manipulations.

I definitely believe the SGA stock is the most comfortable stock I've encountered so far.
The MOE forend to me is more aesthetically pleasing rather than having any superior functionality though.

I've been looking at the 590a1 as well. Don't care much for the look of the bayonet. Makes the whole thing too long.

Fully loaded the 20"bbl will feel nose heavy. After a couple rounds the balance will move rearward. Also, ditch the bayo.

The oversized safety works great. While you're at it get the stainless follower. You can "feel" the status of your SG even with gloves on....

I had only put the bayonet on for the pictures of the complete package. I have no idea when I'd have a practical reason to leave it on.

I was looking at S&J safety. It seems to be the "go to" and would be a benefit with gloves.

As for followers, I'm not sure yet though I'll probably go to a stainless or high vis. Do you replace your spring with the change of follower? I've seen some of plastic ones do.

I don't remember replacing the spring when the stainless follower was installed. BTW…it's a VCS product from TacOrd.
The S&J jumbo safety (see EL34/6L6 above) would probably allow you to "flip" the safety without breaking your grip if you're running a pistol grip on your SG.

Mad respect copeland on telling them to hit the bricks with the blackwater edition. Anytime I see someone with one, well.... It's kind of like meeting a new coworker who is missing fingers.

I installed the wider jumbo safety that S&J offers. I really like it.

Yea it looks good and seems to fit the decor of the gun. I like that it has positive gripping both directions. But on and off safety should be easy by feel.

I've been looking further into it, I might go with the fed magpul furniture just for fun. The sling loop on the butt looks good and somewhere through my parts search I saw a slung bezel the screwed in and still ha a quick release.

I've seen guys with limited options run their sling off the pump which makes little sense. I think I'll consider the bezel off the bayo lug and if it sucks, I'll switch to the barrel/mag tube clamp. I have a tan or fde vickers sling that I need to put to use.

No single points considered to wield this mighty beast.

Thanks. Are these over stock from when black water was still around?

I want one of those. exactly what I want. comes with those sights? Cylinder bore I am guessing?

does that bayo fit an AR-15 if it has a bayo lug?
Yes. As shown in the pictures the mag tube end cap has been machined to fit the bayonet ring and the bayonet lug on mag tube is the standard.

So I went and picked up the magpul sga in FDE today.

To my surprise, the swap is much better for the fire stock on the 590 than when I did my dominion arms.

I'm now trying to figure out what fore mount I will use for a sling. I'm trying to go barrel clamp style I think.

you wont have to change the spring if you up grade for the follower, while the stainless followers are"shiney kit" I would take a pass on thoses, follower are intended to wearout, not ware your mag tube out.
the other issue with steel followers is you have to lube them, shotgun mag tubes do not like lube as dirt stick to it and will make your gun jam at some point.
High quality plastics like Delrin are self lubricating and requite nothing.
To me the large metal safety is a must.
Not because we make all these parts, just simpley the facts.

FYI on the mesa side saddle being so great, it is well build, but leave ammo In the shell holder for a few days then take it to the range and see what happens...
The davis speed feed stocks do suck, its the same think that happened to the Knoxx comp stock when Blackhawk took over.
Both products worked very well until the company was sold off and production moved to china.
* lots of good stuff is made in china, but when you sole intent is to make a product as cheap as possible, you end up with crap.

Thanks BBB I may be putting in a kit order pretty quick for a safety, follower and mkiii

El34. You've just sold me on the ghost grey furniture. Are you running a sling?
