Apparently they've done away with the rail on the newer model... maybe it's for attaching iron sights to?

I just bought a Vortex Viper 20x60 x 80 with a picatinny rail, what is the rail for ?
I would guess to put some small red dot to do quick target alignment without having to zoom out. It seems people put binoculars there aswell.

I run a red dot on my spotter (co-witnessed with the spotter's reticle), it's pretty incredible how much faster I can get the spotter on target using the red dot.
