Hi All, i came across this website through http://www.huntinggearguy.com/.

I have no background in guns and hunting (i.e., no familial history). My desire to hunt and buy a gun was ignited by Joe Rogan and Steven Rinella. I recently purchased my first gun, a Remington 870 Express Pump Action 12 gauge Shotgun combo (http://www.basspro.com/Remington-Model-870-Express-PumpAction-Shotgun-Combo/product/10217898/). The store clerk said i could hunt both smaller and larger game, such as birds and deer with it. I'm still in the process of making myself familiar with the gun. I will be going skeet shooting next week in Oshawa to get comfortable using the gun.

Also, i believe i need ear muffs to block the noise. Any suggestions would be welcome and encouraged, please and thank you.

Welcome to CGN!
Hearing protection is definitely a good idea at the range and target shooting but personally I never use any when hunting.

Welcome!
Great choice on your first firearm.
Ear protection can consist of ear plugs, and or ear muffs. You should always wear eye protection as well. I prefer old style ear muffs like. Pair of Peltor Optime 105, rather than the electronic shooting ear muffs. I have tried a Caldwell electronic ear muffs and the wind blowing over the mic drove me nuts.

Ear muffs or plugs are a must for at the range.

While hunting it gets a little more complicated as you usually want to be able to hear what is going on around you. What I ended up going with was a pair of EP3 Sonic Defenders. I can put them in my ear and pull them out just enough so that I can hear pretty well, but they hold on to your ear well, so all it takes is a quick little push the rest of the way in (which can also be done while wearing gloves when it gets colder) and you've got a decent noise reduction. I use them with the center plugs in, I don't find the baffled noise reduction to work well enough for me.

I have used electronic ones for a long time now and would not go back. You can adjust volume to wind conditions and i find that i do not take them off during shooting time to hear conversation better and then get a blast from someone else.

NAA.

Hearing protection is a must, as you will find out the first time you mistakenly take a shot without protection! Television would have you believe that
gunshot noise is not that big a deal, but the reality is: Shock, ringing and temporary deafness, for many of us. There is a lot of benefit to electronic
hearing protectors, you get to hear everything except loud bangs.

Go with ear plugs. Muffs can break their seal around your ear when your shoulder and aim the gun.

Thank you ALL for the warm welcome and helpful suggestions on ear muffs and eye protection (which i had not even considered, even though i wear glasses haha).

I use the Howard Leight Impact Sport and really like them. It seems like you can always find them on sale on Amazon.ca for around half price. The low profile design lets you get proper cheek-weld without knocking them off your ears.
