Ive been looking to join the black rifle club for a while, so I figured I'd add to the growing number of restricted rifle owners in Canada, especially in light of recent events, and the overwhelming ignorance of the common Canadian towards firearms. Maybe I can convert a few :)
It's nothing fancy, but this morning I saw a Dominion Arms 5.56 on the EE and jumped on it ! Now I can only hope the transfer happens before the doors lock at Canada Post, lol, it would break my heart to know its sitting in a Postal transfer station for the duration of a lockout or strike!
I wasn't looking for a competition gun, just something affordable that the wife and I can play with at the range, and slowly add what I want to make it mine, as money permits :)
I have read some reviews on the DA, and most people say it is a solid gun for the money, but I would certainly appreciate some feedback from anyone who owns or has played with one, pointers on ammo, etc
I am really looking forward to receiving my DA, it might not be a Cadillac, but I've driven beaters for years, and they always get the job done:)

Congrats on your purchase! A Norinco was my "first" AR aswell and a good way to figure out what you like/don't like without breaking the bank.

Good for you! Fancy or not doesn't matter to most of us; some gun owners are too chicken to even buy one. Every time I hear someone joining the "AR club" it warms my heart just a little. Gives me a just a little bit of hope for the future.

Welcome to the club!
I haven't figured out if ARs are more like mushrooms, or like Lay's chips.
Mushrooms becuase they seem to pop overnight, and Lay's chips 'cause you can't have just one.... ;-})>

Just arrived, and it's in really nice shape, looks almost new :) can't wait to try it out, Saturday can't get here quick enough!!

Was doing some work to my friends DA556 over the weekend, I put in a wolff trigger function pack and some other goodies, And I was so impressed with the quality of the gun, Couldn't find any tool marks anywhere, fit and finish looked better than my Armalite m15a4. Now I want one too!

Some random thoughts:

Norcs will run perfectly well, even if abused - they're normally around a 2 minute gun, which is fine - in fact it's better than the US Army requires. You're going to want ammo, lots of ammo. They run through ammo very quickly, and there's virtually no way to have too much. Part of the fun with these is you don't feel any guilt from running them hard, it's not a $3K rifle so you don't obsess over little scratches. I like the ATR pistol mags - 10 rounds, Canadian and have the pistol they're made for and the word pistol, molded right into them beside a little Maple Leaf. They're also a good length for manipulating and sitting in pouches. I had a first gen Norc 14 1/2", and then I had a Norc 10.5" upper on an Armalite lower. The 10.5 had the extractor issue, but it was a $5 parts drawer fix and then it ran like a top, so, all in all, if you want a gun to shoot a lot, a Norc/DA is a terrific choice. Just don't forget the ammo. I remember someone on here (who's tastes run to high end stuff) tried to run a Norc/DA into the ground on a course - he couldn't, despite knowing exactly how to stop an AR - he was impressed.

Thanks for the info enefgee, I will look into the ATR pistol mags, I grabbed a couple of RRA 10 round mags locally already, but I guess like ammo, more is better :) I think this AR will serve its purpose well, a platform for the wife and I to learn on, and I will probably try a match or two that they have locally, just for fun, other than that , just to burn thru ammo at the range
