So as the title states I decided to pick up a Russian SKS (more like impulse bought one). Well it finally arrived in the mail yesterday and much to my surprise there was zero cosmoline on the rifle. I was really surprised and actually a little let down, I was kind of looking forward to cleaning all the stuff off! Is that normal to get a rifle without any cosmoline on it? I got it from one of the site sponsors and I figured caked in cosmo was the norm.

Onto the rifle itself. So far it appears that all the numbers match except for the magazine. And for some reason the magazine does not want to come off the rifle. I've popped the trigger group out but it's just jammed in there. Anyone have any tips for removing a magazine that doesn't want to come out? The mechanic in me wants to start prying on it but I figured I should ask before I break something.

Lastly where can I get replacement springs for the trigger group? Mine are all rusty and even though they function fine it bothers me immensely!

Well, you can clean it anyways, you'll find cosmoline somewhere, and no better way to get to know your. Gun thatn take it apart and clean it and tinker. Not sur why your mag would be stuck in there, its just on a swivel, shouldnt do any damage to work it out. I think. As far as spare parts, well, just buy a few more rifles and take the bits. I have a few spare parts guns.

I'm guessing once you completely strip it down including taking out the firing pin, you will find some cosmoline. In the past I have purchased spare SKS parts from Lever Arms in Vancouver, don't know if they have springs but worth checking.

^^ that's a great suggestion. Dave at HiCal typically has lots of SKS accessories and if not I'am sure he can find it.

Its not covered in cosmoline because its a refurbished. You'll find oily parts, but usually they wont come packed full of sludge. Usually its the super grades that were packed in that stuff for storage to preserve them.

I've completely taken down the rifle including the firing pin, no cosmo anywhere. I've actually taken it apart a couple times (minus the whole magazine issue, gonna tackle that tomorrow)

Saryet, I'm on their website now. I think I've found exactly what I need, thanks a bunch!

fraserdw, the bolt is out of the rifle when I'm trying to take the mag out.

jonny360, that makes a lot of sense now that I think about it.

Accessories, not parts.... Hical is where you go to unnecessarily pimp out your SKS, not repair it.

Dave may be a nice guy, but he mames and kills good honest rifles!

Say what now?

If the only thing left in the stock is the mag take a long screwdriver and it thru bottom of open mag. Gently lever toward front of stock til mag releases.

If you don't completely take it apart to clean out the grease, oil , and cosmo it will ooze all over the place when it heats up from shooting it. And I mean OOZE, it will drip on everything. Wrap/stuff the bare wood stock with papertowels and put it in a hot/warm place for a day or two. You will be surprised how much comes out.

Wish my refurb came with no cosmoline. I would say the gun might have been a return after somebody bought and cleaned it. Probably answers why the springs are rusty. Do they clean up with oil and a toothbrush.

Nope the springs are beyond the point of what oil and a brush could fix. Trigger still functions properly so we'll see how it does once I put a few rounds through it. Aside from that the gun seems mechanically fine. Whats the worst that could happen if one of the springs breaks? Trigger fails to function?

Raton that seems like a pretty logical reason behind the rifle having no cosmoline on it. You'd think they'd at least try to fix the issue before sending the rifle to someone else though.

Excellent - hope you find what you need and if you don't see it, give them a call. Contrary to what others here may say, they actually have several bins full of factory parts and some trigger assemblies in the back.

-Saryet, out!-

Most of the ones with the Russian B!t(h stamp have had some of the Cosmo removed, probably to put their TATT, on it!
I have also been seeing more rust on the latest SKS coming in, seems that they were probably stored in one of the more damp warehouses/mines!
