Just bought my first Sks /updated Feb/2/17 refinished the stock

Yes, and honestly taking the bolt apart is easy peasy so why not do it and remove any cosmoline inside?! Also, if you can wait, wrapping the the wood pieces in a towel/rags, into a black garbage bag and onto the dash board of your ride when it is above 25 degrees works wonders for getting the cosmoline out.

Picked up a 53 Tula from Cabelas from their last SKS Sale. Finally took it out onto the range. Man, was it fun. I got a few questions though... Do you all use the hot water cleaning method for corrosive ammo? The tapered gas tube is particularly difficult to clean.. I am sure i am doing something wrong when i clocked closed to 2h cleaning a soviet mass infantry rifle. Also, I am trying to get a reasonable scope onto my SKS. I keep on reading that receiver cover rails won't hold zero or have all sort of problems. What rail system do you guys use?

I will sometimes run a couple mags of non corrosive barnaul at the end of my shooting session, I could be wrong but it seems to me it will burn up some of the corrosive crap that is left from the corrosive ammo. Then I'll use g 96. Ive left the gun for weeks after without a full detail and it's been fine. As for an optic mount the matador scout rail works well for red dots, while maintaining stripper clip ability, and I like the magwedge rail for a longer mount. And the magwedge raveneye sight is a nice product also.

I got my two SKS , 1954 izzy refurb with laminate stock and parkerized nicely, bore looks excellent, finish on the stock is muddled a bit needs polished, great gun, second is a 52 Tula, refurb laminate stock, parkerized similar to the 54, both very nice shape! Now to get them home! Thanks for the heads up shootsavage,
For anyone in the St. John's area OP is a great sports store and has lot of items on sale, SKS are gone but anyone with a 7mm wsm can get Winchester X something reg.$60 for $24.98, don't remember the exact name of the ammo but being discontinued, if I had a rifle in that round I would have bought it all! Tons of great deals, I hope these guys become a sponsor here, real nice to talk to!

Thanks for the tips.

As for the rails, i have been looking at the full length rails, has anyone used latest MagWedge rail with cutout for the stripper clip? Does it hold zero? is it durable? It is only supported on both ends, and looks easy to damage if the scope is bumped accidentally.

Well, I would say less risk of slam fire, some people still may let their bolt/firing pin get gumed up enough for it to stick, but I understand what you mean! Can you tell me if the fireing pin/Spring fits all SKS or do they have different pins? Thanks, I also use varsol for the metal parts and heat/steam for the wood!

Murray's pins have a 100% guarantee against slam fire and based on how they work for me, I believe it. Check out his website, very interesting history of these firing pins and the fix with some differences between years.

Your welcome, told ya they were great to deal with.

What's the web site? Can you post a link?
don't waste your money. There is nothing wrong with the stock sks firing pins. you just need to take the bolt apart once in awhile and clean it out. It is super easy and takes a couple of minutes. the Murray's firing pins have a history of breaking.

It is super easy and takes a couple of minutes. the Murray's firing pins have a history of breaking. You literally only have to take the bolt apart every ten or so trips to the range. just check to see if the firing pin rattles around in the bolt when you clean the gun . If it rattles you are good to go

Thank you for this info, I would have assumed it would have to come apart to be cleaned anyway, spring or no spring, but if there's an issue with them breaking, then I don't want that. They've worked for years without any springs so mine will do the same.
Thanks again, welder

I might have gotten the last one! You should have no problem getting almost the same price on SKS and ammo, in St. John and in Freddy, they usually have the best prices and sales! A friend just texted me a pic of the Freddy CTC with a sale on x39 1440 rounds for $225. Lots of other stuff on sale there too. I would say St. John would be similar also the gun dealer puts on a good sale once in a while!
Guys what are these stores or sellers of this ammo your talking about? Do they have websites or just phone numbers and could you provide either to me? I wouldn't mind jumping on a sale like that myself if it comes up again.
Thanks, Pat

Pat, they are Canadian tire stores, lot of "CTC" carry firearms and ammo the ones in New Brunswick seem to be most robust and have great prices! But the ones that sell around my area still have reasonable prices, on line, the closest to you would be tradeex, they are a sponsor here and have a tag at the top of this page! Also Wolverine who have a great price but shipping may kill the deal for you! This is for crates of 7.62x39 ammo comes in lots of 1200 to 1500 rounds, from Russian, Czech, china and other places! I didn't get to look around you area when there this weekend but they may carry crates of x39 too! Also try Arms east who are a sponsor here, not sure if they are into the crate ammo thing or not! Good luck, buy it cheap and stack it deep!

You should try Canadian tire there on Hebron way.. They usually have a good selection. I'm surprised that OP doesn't have those crates there, they usually do a couple times a year.

Didn't see any the other day when I went in to OP, but they may have had them on sale with the SKS so maybe all sold out, they are thinning everything for inventory count! Good sale items there!

Yeah they're practically giving #### away in there now a days to get rid of it, tax free on the works of it.. Make room for the new stuff! I haven't been there as of late so I can't say for sure what they have, but like you said perhaps it all went with the SKS'

Yep good to support your LGS, that way they will be around when you need them!

I'm pretty sure that no Canadian tire stores sell crates of ammo here but Arms East might, I'll give them a call.
Thanks, Pat
