After putting about 500 rounds through a brand new stainless barrel, synthetic stock 10/22, and finding the bolt release a pain in the ass, I decided I'd disassemble my 10/22, do the auto-bolt release mod, and clean her out for the first time (I ran a little compressed air through it before first firing, but nothing else).
With all the great DIYs out there, it was relatively straight forward. I polished a few parts like the sear, the hammer, etc. The hammer has a rough texture to begin with, took that down with 800, and you could clearly see casting marks. Once I got those off, went to a 2000 stone, then some Flitz. The sear got the same treatment, and a slight profiling. Did the same to the disconnector. All the little lips that catch on parts like the hammer and sear got a light sand and polish as well.
I can take a few pics if anyone is having trouble with their 10/22. Lost between a pound and a pound and a half in trigger pull, and seems to be less of a crunchy/scratchy trigger but maybe that's just psychological since I did the polishing. Let's see if my wife notices. I can definitely be more aggressive and likely smooth it out even more, but it's already noticeable.
I bet she will notice the auto-bolt release, instead of having to fiddle that that annoying little tab. I used a rotary tool with a small stone bit, took the "tooth" out, and made the slight bow out as shown. Went light just in case, put it back together, didn't quite release reliably. Took it a part, profiled it a bit more, put it back together, and the bolt releases after being locked open. Might try to get a few shots off tomorrow and see how it feels.
