I took the Black Badge course last week and what an experience. Learned the proper and safe way to handle my pistol. We shot close to 400 rounds in two days. If I don't choose to shoot IPSC the course was still very beneficial and I recommend it to all pistol shooters. It will make my visits to the range far more enjoyable as I now have a very good comfort level while handling my pistol. I will set up some stages and blast away.
Question; Is it permissable at outdoor ranges to draw from the holster and shoot targets moving laterally at the firing line or will it cause other shooters further down the line some angst. I am usually by myself and this would not be a problem.

The Black Badge course you took has only scratched the surface. Do yourself a favour. Go to matches and compete. That is what will make you a better shooter.

I'll jump on board to echo what these guys have already said. Go ahead and shoot some matches, and you will see what a blast can be had. Truly it would be a shame to not experience the IPSC environment, because it's full of characters, and that's for sure. For me, my weekly shoot is as much about having fun with the guys as it is about shooting. I really do hope this is universal, but in my year or so at this, I have received nothing but support and encouragement in this game. Guys will help you when you need it, and be the first to give you the thumbs up when you steal their stage. Where else can you get that sort of sportsmanship? Ok Ok, enough plugging the sport.

As for your question though, that is one that would most likely be directed to your club safety officer ( or whatever ). The one thing that makes IPSC ( or the other similar sports ) really different is that the firing line is a variable - and often downrange. So, I dunno, but I hope to meet you at a match somewhere....

welcome to the club, now get out and shoot and have some fun!
as for your question, it's up to your range. some will allow it, others won't.
