So I sold off my 338 Lapua because I wasn't using it enough to justify having $9K tied up in a rifle that I had to drive somewhere to use.
Decided to try out a 300win so I bought a used Rem 700 5R Stainless from the EE, a second hand but unused FDE MDT Tac-21 chassis, had the barreled action coated olive drab and threw it all together under my Nightforce 5.5-22x56 in a Desert Tech 20moa one piece mount and this is what I ended up with.

Big thanks to Barret at Arma-Coat for the awesome job applying the green.

Having had a 5r, I am a HUGE fan of the brushed stainless the action and barrel came in. I'm saddened to see that beauty hidden under the paint, but to be honest, I don't think the stainless would have worked with the FDE, so I think you made the right call.....

Now, a black stock/chassis with a stainless action and barrel, that's pure ###!

And the results, no handloads yet but it looks good so far with the factory crap. Sorry, only 3 round groups, didn't feel like taking all day letting the barrel cool and subjecting my neighbors to any more noise than needed.

The one marked with pull felt bad as soon as I fired, I knew it was me so I shot a 4th for this group

Now I just need to do some handloading and see what it can really do. I'm going to start with Hornady 208gr BTHP and go from there.

Agreed, I just couldn't picture a FDE chassis with a stainless barrel hanging out the end. It can always be sandblasted off later if I go another direction in the future.

would be neat to see a back to back comparison of groups stock to upgraded! :)

I thought about shooting it in the HS Precision stock before going forward but it was nicely bedded so I doubt the results would have been much different.
I was just too excited to get it together so I pulled it apart and took it in for coating as soon as it arrived in the mail.

I'm curious why you felt that you got rid of your 338 Lapua to go to a 300 Win? You mentioned that to use the 338 you had to drive to somewhere to use it...is the 300 Win not capable of the long range shots as well? Certainly the 338 Lapua has greater terminal performance but I would rarely hunt anything with it as is mostly a paper puncher. To be honest I was unsure which to chose myself and of course expected a little more range with the 338 but how much difference do you expect to see? The cost factor for the ammo was a big consideration for me (I know I own a gun store but Dianne still puts limits on me) but in the end I chose a 338 Lapua in an HS Precision HTR (heavy tactical rifle) as I got a great deal on a new one (clear out) and got a case of factory Sellier & Bellot match ammo that was damaged in shipping (cheaper than I could reload for it). I would think the 300 Win would have more choices for bullets as .30 cal is more available than 338 bullets for reloading. Phil.

I think my decision was influenced by how much powder the 338 goes through and that it makes a lot more noise. My neighbors are not far enough away to be shooting the Lapua regularly.
If you were to check my purchase history at your shop and see how many projectiles and pounds of powder I buy a year you'd know why I want to shoot cheaper 30 cal projectiles and use less powder.
Switching to 300win let's me shoot almost as far on the rare opportunities I get to shoot long range for less money and lets me go from a $7000 rifle to one I have under $3000 into.
Now that I've seen this rifle shoot half moa with factory loads I've put my Cadex 308 up for sale. Beautiful rifle but a lot of money tied up in it.

Shame to see that very sweet .338 of yours gone and while no ordinary rifle easily compares to that very compact yet powerful package, I do like the look of the new rifle. Particularly that very nice Arma-Coat covering and even though she appears to have potential as a shooter, I really believe your going to miss that very sweet .338.

Good luck with the reloading and be sure to post up your results...

Cheers D

Selling (trading) the DT SRS was difficult, I really just didn't find myself shooting it often enough to justify having $7000 tied up in it.

I don't know. I think the SS barrel looks decent even with a FDE chassis. My next one though will be with a black chassis and SS barrel.

That being said yours looks good. I also think it would look good with that cerakote while in the original stock. Nice project.

Here's a Remington VSSF II 223 in a Cadex. For comparison with the SS and FDE stock. Sorry about the iphone picks. It looks pretty good in real life. At least I think so.

5R rifles in standard HS stock and a 5R in the FDE version of that HS stock.

Nice collection, I'll have to take a pic like that with all my precision children :)

You made the right call in my opinion. The brown and green chassis just don't go with stainless.

Thanks. I need to get a decent camera. But I need scopes these day more than pictures!

Hahha, ouch!! :kickInTheNuts: If I had feelings, they would be hurt!

Well I didn't mean to hurt anyone's feelings.

Fibreglass type stocks are a bit different. With a tacticool chassis it just seems like stealthy FDE clashes with shiny stainless.

It's just my opinion so don't take it at all seriously!

I didn't take it too seriously. I was just having fun.
