Just finished putting together my first AR lower...and have a quick question.

With the upcoming election, I decided to buy an AR, but don't have $1500 kicking around. Since I wanted to Register something with the CFO just incase Doomsday came along :(:( I purchased a Stripped Armalite lower and one of the Armalite lower kits with a 2 stage Trigger. Now after spending a bit over $300 at Wolverine and 2 hours time I'm in the game.:)

Remember...I've never owned an AR before, and just put it together using instructions off the web, but noticed the safety lever only flicks from fire to safe if the hammer is locked back...is this normal? or will the lower trigger be compressed when an upper is installed on it?

Dont worry... I haven't been dry firing it.
 
That's how Mr. Stoner designed it to be. Just don't drop the hammer on a stripped receiver. It'll cost you a new bolt catch.
 
Curious, how long did it take you to put the lower parts kit in? I have never done one before also. Any special tools needed? Thx.
 
I guess it took me about 2 hours, I could have done it faster, but wasnt sure how the trigger and hammer fit in, but took my time taping over the receiver so I wouldn't scratch anything.

I've heard there can be issues using a pin kit from one manufacturer and a receiver from another, but the "2stage trigger" that Wolverine had was only $30 more than a basic Stag kit from ArmsEast, So I opted for the 2 stage Armalite setup.

The only hard part is the pivot pin detent (step 3), I tried 5 or 6 times last night but gave up for fear of loosing the detent. Im going to make a tool that many suppliers sell and give it another go tonight.

^ hold the detent between your fingers, position the receiver so it is pointing straight up (like in the diagram above), position the detent on top of the spring so it holds itself vertical, bring the takedown pin straight down onto the detent pushing it down into the hold and in the same motion slide the takedown pin in through the pivot pin hole.

Just keep the detent straight when you're depressing it under the takedown pin.

Takes about 20seconds and no tool required.

Ill do you one better...after trying to find something 1/4" thick to drill a hole thru I had a brain wave; ran out to the garage and grabbed a spare shear pin for my snowblower. It fit perfectly, i fed the spring and detent thru, pushed down with an allen key, then rotated it so it was fully compressed, carefully push the shear pin back using the take-down pin and presto, installed in 20 seconds, no flying detents. Thanks for the tip though!
