Just got a 270!

So I just picked up a Savage Axis in .270. Wholesale Sports has the Savage XP package on sale for $289, and Savage is offering a $50 mail in rebate ontop of that, so it was really hard to say no. I plan on using this as my primary hunting rifle. I have a 1918 Enfield no1 mk3, which I was planning on using for my primary hunting rifle, but its not the easiest rifle to scope (read too expensive) and the iron sights, while perfectly suitable for under 100 yards are a bit lacking for my tastes.

So Im wondering about bullet weights for this caliber. Generally recommendations seem to be 130 for deer-sized game, 150-160 for elk/moose. What would be ideal for black bear? Do you guys use multiple loads, depending on game, or just pick one you like and shoot anything in your path with it?

Im sure I have more questions, but lets start with these.

I picked up the same package in 308. For this price $290 CAD - $50 USD in rebate ... The gun cost around $235 CAD... A freaking SKS cost like $200 now a days. This is a crazy deal and you can't beat it.

130 for everything, get a decent quality projectile and you can use it from coyotes up to moose/elk.

An excellent one gun is all you need chambering and one load as well.

Thanks for the tip! I was looking at an Axis in .243 and noticed the rebate in the Cabelas flyer. I was thinking $289.99 after the rebate was a decent deal, but this was too hard to resist. Just ordered it up.

Can't help much with the load info on the .270. I'm sure many great options exist for everything you mentioned. I think deer and black bear can be taken with the same load, 130 to 150gn. Moving up to adult moose and elk might need a heavier bullet like a 170gn.

I love my savage hunter in 270! Fantastic rifle, great cartridge! I tend to keep both 130's and 150's with me. Haven't decided what I like best yet. The rifle on the other hand loves everything I've thrown at it! Find what works best for you and your rifle. Get out there and shoot!

What about black bear? I was thinking 150 would give better penetration, but is that required on a black bear? What about for short-range encounters with an angry or annoyed bear?

130gr is enough for most anything you can hunt in Canada, except may be a big old bull elk or a bison.

I have found some of my rifles shoot better with certain bullet weights.

I have seen a 270 that likes 150gr better.
I recently found a Mosin Sniper that shoots much better with 203gr than the mil ammo.


It may be worth while trying the 150.

Don't forget the various 140g loads, they strike a nice balance.

Oh, I forgot to add, that Swift Scirocco II in 130gr, is your friend.On game performance and ballistics are wonderful.

There is a point of diminishing return when using heavier projectiles.Just have to play with your ballistics program to show these differences.

Good buy u will not be disappointed with the 270. I live on Vancouver island so for deer I use 110 grain hornady vmax bullets very effective and super accurate but when I go off island I load up 130s. Enjoy your new toy

The Axis is a great gun for what it is. I have a 30 06 and I like it. Make sure to modify the trigger spring with a 10-24 machine screw and a lighter spring (ballpoint pen worked for me). It is nice and light to carry in the bush but the 30 06 recoils pretty hard, the 270 should be better. I am planning to add a boyds laminate stock to mine to increase the weight a bit and reduce recoil.

The accuracy of my axis is as good as any other production rifle should have (MOA), I am happy with mine for now, maybe later I will get more Fuddish and buy something with a bit more nostalgia...

I figured a light rifle like this would kick a bit in a bigger cartridge. I have a Rem 783 (slightly heavier than Axis) in .308 and it's bearable. The .243 should be no issue.

I bought the same rifle last July 305.00 I also swapped out the scope. It retails for 40.00 on Ebay. I have doubts about it lasting so went with a Bushnell Trophy XLT 4-12x40 Also got a Boyds stock in nutmeg with thumbhole and riflebasix trigger (sav-1) Next item for it will be a Glades armory tactical bolt knob. Shoots very accurately

From what I read here the 130gr will do everything and shoot the flatest, and at this point its more about the bullet construction than the weight. Like partitioned vs interlocked etc ...
