Just got a Gremlin

So I was shooting my CZ 858 all summer with no problems. Probably put at least 500 rounds of non corrosive ammo through it. Yesterday went to the range and every 10-20 rounds there was no click when I pulled the trigger. The primer had a weak dent in it and after reloading that same round it worked. After reading the posts it seemed that what was happening is the Gremlin. Initially I was blaming the low temperature though. I started reading all the posts and got lost in all the different ways to solve this problem. My question is: What is the current up to date wisdom on this issue? I do not mind spending few extra bucks to fix it. I just want the best solution. Is there a consensus now on the best Gremlin solution?

I used CLP. I tried to apply it evenly, but it was very cold. Do you recommend to wait till summer? I had some problems in summer also, but it was different. I actually heard a click when I pulled the trigger, but it was not firing. I used non corrosive South African ammo. Chopper1 looked at it and he thought that on some rounds the primers were sitting too deep. This time, however, there was no click when I pulled the trigger, but the primer looked indented. I tried both the leftover SA ammo and corrosive Czech ammo, result was the same. So, how can you tell light-strike from Gremlin and what do you do for light strike? I assume that the rifle is designed to handle cold. It is not that warm in Eastern Europe. I am from Ukraine myself, the weather is pretty much the same here and there.

I have no 1st hand experience with the 'gremlin'.. but I was under the assumption that it caused a "no click".. Correct me if I am wrong.

If it's striking and not firing I would think it's either the ammo, or light striking. CLP really doesn't like being this cold. If you ave any oil around the striker or worse yet, in/around the firing pin, that could cause it. I would suggest switching to a dry graphite lube for winter rather than a oil. It'll do wonders.

In the winter my VZ is completely dry and just a couple blows of graphite on the guide rails.

This time it was a "no click" thing. So I guess this is what people describe as a Gremlin. I will PM you about tabbing bolt carrier.

Why should you have to mod it.

I do not understand. I have read the many threads about the 858 and it's failure to fire concerns. The maker of the rifle should have the repair for the concerns or at least supply the information on the repair. All I see in these posts is I sent my rifle back and I hope they send me one that works. In my books this is wrong, make the dealers and the makers that sell these rifles responsible.

Am I wrong for feeling this way?

sounds like the gremlin- you get a dent in the primer long before youve even tried to pull the trigger.

there is no "click" at all, the part that moves forward when you pull the trigger had moved forward with the bolt carrier and it wasnt supposed to. This part , the striker (thanks punkrockboy) would normally smack the firing pin when you pull the trigger but as it slid forward with the bolt carrier it had already "slightly" hit the firing pin putting a weak dent in the primer.

anyway its the gremlin, I just had it.

I wish the "fixed/tabbed" bolt carrier was available for sale in Canada....you can buy it in the usa. I think it is legal to mail it or move it to canada from the usa- why dosent anyone? Order it from the CZ store in the USA, then mail it to your place in Canada.

Wolverine has "parts kits" for $45 so if you mess up your bolt carrier tabing it you can get another easily and cheaply (the parts kit contains the bolt carrier and lots of other innards to your gun).
