Just got a new Wingmaster but..

I just bought the 870 Wingmaster 12ga, 28"BBL.
I was just wondering if this kind of "wear" is normal. The guy at the gun counter said that this part would be all silver and worn after a few hundred shots. Everything else looks spotless!

It's perfectly normal.

It means it isn't NIB because people have been handling it.

They have been racking the slide to show an empty chamber before passing it across the counter.

I have and older 870 Special Purpose. I actually polished the finish off the action bars to smooth up the action. Works well.

"...how'd you polish it off?..." An 870 SP is parkerized, not blued, as I recall. You don't have parkerizing. Leave the bluing alone. Anyway, it's not the bluing that makes an action rough. It's tiny burrs or uneven steel. That'll go away with use. I can empty my 7 shot 870 in well under 5 seconds on pins or plates. You'll find your's is plenty smooth.

how'd you polish it off?

I applied some fine grinding compound to the action bars and cycled them in/out of the action a few doz times, BUT NO MORE! I then completely stripped the action and cleaned everything with hot water from the tap to remove ALL the gr compound from the action. I then gave the action bars abit more work by using some fine grinding compound on a small block of wood to smooth out the the rough edges and burrs.

Make sure all compound is removed before reassembly and then lube with your favourite oil.

BTW .... Very hot water from the tap works great on cleaning guns parts. Sometimes I spray with a solvent first, but no always. Just make sure all the parts are dry before going back together. Light lube required.

Buy as many cases of shotgun shells and clay pigeons as you can afford. Shoot the clays with the shells. If you can't afford the clays, just hunt with the gun. Lots. You can even mix these techniques if you like.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

Oddly, these polishing technique also improve your shooting skills.
