Just got a new XCR... Now what optics...

I installed LMT fixed iron sights on my 7.5" CQB AR thinking I would be done.
While the "iron sights" worked fine I also installed an Aimpoint Comp 4moa providing absolute co-witness with the LMT's. I find this setup very fast and accurate out to ~75yrds(with my eyes).
I've since discovered the benefits of a magnified optic and if I were to do it over again I would splurge on a Nightforce NXS 1-4x24. A little pricey but I there's something to be said about doing things right the first time!
I'll sell you my LMTs/Aimpoint so I'll have funds to source a NXS;)

I just googled this scope and looks very interesting. At under $600usd Its priced well and demand should be high for it if its a good product. Reminds me of the IOR Pitbull.

Crossbones, did you actually get to fondle one? This scope may be on the short list of a lot of shooters. It would look good on my AR!
 
TA31 series ACOG, can't go wrong..Try the ''Red Donut of death'' one, seems more versatile than the Chevron model for shorter distance stuff, just my 2 cents with experience I can back-up..

what's the plus sides to the Elcan Spectre over say, a 4x ACOG TA31

Spectre = Heavy, bulky but has variable 1x-4x option (Don't forget it goes off by 0.25MOA everytime you change power.)

ACOG = Lite, simple has a fix 4x. Red/green donut can be used almost like Aimpoint.
 
The field of view on the specter is superp as well. It it's bulky, and some people dot like the mount. But instantly switching from 1x to 4x is nice as well.
 
Considering you can get a gently used acog for around or under $1000, and the spectres go for the $1700 range, that is a fair amount of coin left over from the purchase of the acog to go into an add on red dot or ammo or what have you....
 
Armament technology was selling Specters for far less than $1700 at CFSAC. They also appear to have fixed the zero shift problem. I am still not 100% sold on them due to the externally adjustable mount and how my C79 ELCAN sights have had zero shift in the past. That said ELCAN is trying hard to fill a gap in rifle optics and the new C79A2 sights are holding up very well.

I still think ACOGs have poor optical clarity and lousy eye relief. I am really not a fan.
 
One of the best things about shooting service rifle is the wide range of gear that shows up. Most owners will let you examine their gear and tell you all about it. Plus you can compare outside on a range which is where you will be using it (or everywhere with your damn non res XCR).

I did. Solid construction, decent eye relief and clear. Still deciding between that and an ACOG. Though the Viper is looking better because of the money that I'll save for something else like another firearm or ammo.

I'm not aware of such a place in Canada, but I'd try calling some of the larger shops in your area and see if they have anything mounted up. Down here at the scottsdale gun club (www.scottsdalegunclub.com) they have a rack full of blue dummy m4's on the sales floor with a variety of optics mounted that you can play with as much as you like. Eotechs, aimpoints, acogs, some other reflex sights and a handful of longer range setups. Don't think there's an elcan though.
 
About 25 minute drive if traffic is light...I go multiple times every time I'm in PHX

Probably the nicest indoor range I have been to, the selection of range rentals is amazing (check their website...and that's not all of them)

I've taken some private lessons with Joe Bridgeman there, great guy
